I have just found out of Derricks passing, I was a colleague at the VA, I had left in January 2022. Derrick was absolutely one of the best human beings I have ever had to honor of knowing, I am so sad to hear of his passing. I so wish I could have seen him one more time!

Today I learned of the death of my friend, D. I met him at KMS where he and I both worked. He was energy, light, kindness and I wanted to know him outside of KMS and as a real friend. I cheered him on his pursuit of MS in SW path. He always cheered, supported and educated me. We met outside of KMS. We wrote each other recommendations. We cried recently over the loss of our shared friend and boss/co worker, Pam. The world is less bright. I send my love to all who are grieving. Peace D

Derrick was a dear friend, a chosen brother, and someone I will miss forever. He was an artist, poet, singer, dancer, and fierce advocate for justice. As a social worker he pushed institutions to evolve and support BIPOC, LGTBQ, and any other underrepresented group. Derrick made me feel capable and inspired. Derrick nurtured every soul he came in contact with. I was lucky enough to have been one. My heart is breaking for his family, friends, & myself. He was love & light. May that love & light continue to shine down on everyone who knew him. Until we meet again, precious friend.

He was one of the most beautiful people I've ever known, and I'm so grateful that our paths crossed even for a few short years. We all have more love in our hearts from knowing him.

I only met Derrick once. He was a dear friend of one of my dear friends. We were eating dinner at a restaurant and Derrick rushed over to the table when he saw my friend. It was the warmest reunion. He was so full of love and energy and his presence was delightful. I was mesmerized by his smile and was looking forward to getting to know him. I heard how much he gave to others and how generous of heart he was. And the constant refrain was of a fun, bright spirit who made everyone smile and helped others whenever he could. The earth has lost a bright light but he lived a full life and in his time here. I heard that he touched so many. Even for someone like me, who met him for a few moments, I was blessed. He laughed, he talked, he hugged, he shared and he left magic in his wake. To his family and friends, I am so so sorry for this great loss. I can only imagine the hole this has left in your hearts. I wish you peace, comfort and love as you say goodbye to this beautiful soul. May you share memories and be held in each other's love through this hard time. Blessings, Jasmine Love
