To the family of Mr. Wright, I am just now at this moment learning of his passing. Please accept my sincere condolences. I want you to know that your father is the reason I went to college. One day in our English class, he asked, " little colored girl where are you going to school." I replied, I wasn't going to college because my family couldn't afford it. He said, "pack up your things, you going to somebody's school because you have potential". He marched me across the hall to coach Adams office. He proceeded to tell him this little color girl needs to go to somebody's college. She has potential. I am happy that God was so gracious to allow me to tell him this in person on a visit back to Atlanta. He was sitting in Paschal's with a group of guys. It gave me great joy to tell him how he changed my life. That same day, he invited me over to his and Tina's home. I was able to see her as well. I'm currently finishing up a book and I mentioned him in my dedications. May the peace of God which reassures the heart rest upon you and your family. Rest well Mr. Wright...you made a difference. I'm just learning this news, along with my family. We are so sorry to learn of Sam's passing. He and my dad were close friends for decades. Deepest condolences from all of us.
My deepest sympathy from Lottie Willis Espinosa class off 75 J.C Murphy School
My memories of Sam Wright were brief but memorable in that I taught at Murphy High for only a short period of time (2 years). It was during the state school mandate to integrate not only the student body but also to integrate the faculty. I initially was teaching at the historic Washington High School, but through forced integration was sent to Murphy High School, for which I am proud to have met the distinguishable Samuel H. Wright. He distinguished himself in many ways - his posture immediately caught your attention - standing and walking erect with a sense of knowing exactly who and whose he was. His voice and diction and perfection of the English language was also memorable. Sam also had a quiet sense of humor, and his knowledge of Atlanta made your talks with him enjoyable. Thank you, Sam, for being a part of my journey - even though I stay at Murphy was brief. The stars were aligned for you and I to meet. Thanks kindly. Marilyn Arrington

My Prayers and Condolences to the family of Mr. Wright. He was a Great English teacher the years I attended Murphy High School. Always Stressed learning and speaking correct English. I will remember him fondly.
Mr. Wright was a legend in the Edgewood Kirkwood East Lake community for well over 50 years. He taught so many Murphy High students during the 70s, 80s, and 90s that it's rare to meet a graduate who didn't know him. Not only was he an amazing English teacher and awesome coach, he was the faculty advisor for the Murphy Eagle, our school newspaper. At the risk of getting into hot water with the administration, Mr. Wright allowed us to write editorials and articles on subjects relevant to Black students during the Black Power movement. While being a hard taskmaster, Mr. Wright only had our best interests at heart. Who doesn't remember having to memorize long poems during the class period or having to do all assignments in ink with no mistakes! But while he asked a lot from his students, he gave even more of himself. He introduced us to Black literature from the Harlem Renaissance. He had Black leaders come to our programs to speak. He found oratorical contests for students to participate in. He was selected STAR teacher innumerable times. And he kept in touch with the students and their families after we graduated. When reunions were planned, Mr. Wright was always invited. To Sam Jr., Bethany, John, and Justin, please know that a multitude of people loved and cared about your father. He will always be remembered.
