Obituary For Sherry Hobbs Combs

Mrs. Sherry Hobbs Combs entered this realm on March 12,1955, to her parents, Carrie Emily Whitfield Brown and Jerry Brown. She was raised during her formative years by her adoptive mother, the late Ms. Tabitha Hobbs.

She made her transition on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at an Augusta Hospital.

Homegoing celebration will be held Thursday, June 13, 2024 at 3:00 P.M. at the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, 604 W. Broad Street, Louisville, GA. Interment will be held in the Jefferson Memorial Gardens, 5727 US Highway 1 North, Louisville, GA.

Public viewing will be held Wednesday, June 12, 2024 from 3:00 – 6:00 P.M.

Sherry began her pursuit of learning at the now defunct, Tenders Grove Elementary School in Avera, Georgia. Leaving Tenders Grove, she was enrolled at the prestigious, but now defunct, Boggs Academy in Keysville, Georgia. Sherry earned her high school diploma from Louisville High School in the class of 1973. She then enrolled at Savannah State College, Savannah, Georgia.

During the course of her life, Sherry held many jobs. She worked for a time as a legal secretary, substitute teacher, and laborer. Always civic minded, Sherry sought to serve her community as councilwoman, and she did so for fourteen years. Her election to that position marked the first time that a woman of color served on the Louisville City Council. She was a mayoral candidate for the city of Louisville in 2021. She opened the door and paved the way for other to follow her lead.

Realizing the need to be joined with other believers, she became a member of the St. Paul Baptist Church, where she also served as pianist for a time. That was her spiritual home and a place of refuge for her soul.

She leaves to cherish her memories her loving husband of forty years, Casper Combs, III, Louisville, GA; her daughter: Fatima Mcgee, Louisville, GA; her mother: Carrie Emily Brown, Louisville, GA; a bonus son, Rodney Combs, Augusta, GA and a brother Rickey Whitfield, Charlotte, NC; her sisters: Marjorie Gibbons, Fitzgerald, GA; Paula (William) Wester, Columbus, GA; Kathleen Mosley, Chicago, IL; Lisa Brown, Louisville, GA; and Michelle Harper, Asheville, NC. The apples of her eye were her grandsons; Emanuel Magee, Fayetteville, NC; and Xavier Magee, Louisville, GA; her sisters and brothers-in-law: Patricia Gamble and Brenda Jones, Augusta, GA; Delores Washington, New York, NY; and Catherine (David) Henderson, St. Petersburg, FL; Leon (Annie) Smith, Augusta, GA; Jimmy Smith and Samuel Washington, Atlanta, GA.

Davis Funeral Home, 725 Beech Street, Louisville, GA is in charge of arrangements for Mrs. Sherry Hobbs Combs.
