It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Roosevelt McKennie, a beloved member of our community. Mr. McKennie, born on January 1, 1961, to the late Sebram and Annie Elisabeth Elbert McKennie, peacefully transitioned at a Saint Joseph / Candler County Hospital on May 17, 2024. His presence and contributions will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. Roosevelt is preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers Verlin Washington and Willie Elbert.
Celebration of Life Service with full Retired Military Honors will be held, on Saturday, June 1st at 11:00 a.m. at the Pierce Grove Baptist Church, 3673 Bostic Mill Road, Bartow, GA.
Roosevelt, a distinguished individual, graduated from Wadley High School in 1979. He dedicated over two decades of his life to serving in the military from 1979 to 2001.
Originally hailing from Bartow, Roosevelt established his home in Hinesville, after he where he excelled as an Ammunition Specialist in the esteemed U.S. Army from July 19th,1979 to July 31st, 2001. Throughout his military tenure, encompassing 22 years, he garnered numerous awards, traversing various locations both locally and internationally. Roosevelt was also an esteemed member of the Masonic Lodge #216 and The Shriner.
Roosevelt embarked on his spiritual journey at a young age at Mount Pleasant CME, eventually becoming a respected member of Pierce Grove Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee and later attained the position as an Ordained Deacon.
Education played a pivotal role in Roosevelt's life, culminating in a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Columbia College. Known for his unwavering love for his family, Roosevelt ensured their well-being was a top priority. He was a devoted fan of the Georgia Bulldogs, an avid cook, the heart of any gathering, a charismatic joker, effortlessly making connections with all, with a generous spirit willing to offer assistance to anyone in need.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 40 years, Wanda B. McKennie. He is also survived by his cherished children: Shannon McKennie, Rashawn McKennie, Dominique McKennie, and Brittany McKennie. Additionally, he is survived by his siblings: Regina Brinson, Diane (Carnell) Talbert, Cathy (Maurice) Simpkins, Johnny “Sam” McKennie, Gregory (Marce) Addison, and Darnell Bryant. His memory is honored by his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Priscilla (Johnnie) Harden, Cheryl Wright, Angela Kearse, Anthony Brown, Andre Wright, Rose White, and Alonzo (Julie) Johnson, Rose White, Linda Roberts, Patricia Washington, Debra Tyson and Brenda Walker.
He is also survived by one aunt, Margie Chisholm. Among those who will carry on his legacy are his grandchildren: JaKawnis Singleton, Amere Mitchum, Kendall Marshall, and Amira Johnson. Lastly, he shared a special bond with Rodney (Sheila) McKinnie, whom he considered like a brother.
