Obituary For Ms. Ruby Lee Washington

Ms. Ruby Lee Washington was born on November 15, 1948 to the late Mr. Dolphus and Mary Washington. Ms. Ruby, as she was affectionately called, was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and sister.

She attended Rosenwald High School and later worked in various capacities throughout her life. When her health began to decline, she retired to enjoy her “Golden Years.” In her early lifetime she traveled and lived various places including Tampa, Florida; Detroit, Michigan; Charleston South Carolina and Irvine, California. She had a smile that lit up a room and the personality to match. She lived her life with joy, courage and on her terms. She loved all her children and her family just as they were, a mother’s unconditional love. She had a sense of humor that kept you laughing and would be there when needed.

Ms. Ruby was very feisty, tough, courageous and outspoken about everything. She could fuss at you and you knew she loved you. She loved to cook and was amazing at it. She often times fed the neighborhood especially during the holidays, until her health took a rapid decline. Another of her joys was decorating and in her home she would often turn the basic of things into pieces of beauty.

The love and gift she had for cooking and decorating was passed onto all of her children. She would often tell them with pride that whatever she taught them they had learned to do better than her, so her job was done.

She accepted Christ at an early stage in her life. She was a longtime member of God’s Servants Ministries and attended Potters Temple First Born Church.

Sunday January 7th, 2024 Ms. Ruby departed this earthly life. She is resting with the Lord and all her family who has gone on before her.

She was preceded in death by her sisters Ella Mae Burke, Dorothy Mae Washington Bonner, Mae Ella Ransom and her brothers Roosevelt Brown, Eddie Lee Brown and Charlie Larry Brown.

She leaves to cherish and celebrate her memories four devoted and loving children: Vonnecia “Pondy” (Ricky) Goodman-Holmes, Waddell Lyons Jr, Leversoy “Luke” (Lakesha) Goodman Jr. and Sunday Smith Allen.
