I met Private First Class Derrick just ONE TIME, and yet, he has left an indelible imprint on my heart. He became a friend to my daughter, Taylor and boyfriend, Simon when they moved to Charlotte. He embraced them as family! When I visited Charlotte this past May for Mother's Day and my birthday, he made it a point to come and meet me. His smile was infectious and he immediately blended into our family, promising a future visit to Seattle. We are devastated by his tragic passing and our fractured hearts go out to the broken hearts of his family and loved ones. Derrick's smile lit up the room. His heart, so huge that if he could, he would wrap all his loved ones in it. So kind-hearted and loving. He was hilarious! There was no way anyone could have a bad day around him because he would always have the perfect words to say in order to lift you up. He was so loyal. I admired his relationship with his friends. Last year, Derrick, Jasmine, Tahirah and I spent maybe 1 hour and half total altogether for the first time in years. I will cherish those moments forever. We went out but he didn't. He came and sat outside to be our bodyguard within one phone call from his bestie-Jazz. lol. He was not playing. That just goes to show that he didn't play about the people he loved. Forever in our hearts. We love you 50!!❤️
