Obituary For Mackie Gordon

Reflections of His Life Mackie James Gordon, affectionately known as “Mack”, was born on October 28, 1948 in Hemingway, South Carolina to the late Frank and Geneva Collier Gordon. He transitioned to his Heavenly home on October 31, 2022. Mackie attended the public schools of Williamsburg County, and graduated from Chavis High School in 1966. Immediately after graduation, he enlisted in the Army where he proudly served his country in the Vietnam War. Mackie was awarded the Purple Heart for his sacrifices. After he was honorably discharged from the Army, he continued his education at Williamsburg Technical College. Mackie was a lifelong member of Chavis AME Church and served in several capacities. After moving to Charleston, SC, he was placed on “watchcare” at New Zion Reformed United Methodist Episcopal Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Daniel Green. He served as a trustee, member of the Male Choir, and bass guitar player for the Music Ministry until his health declined. On April 10, 1981, Mackie married his bride, Mary R. Lewis. He was a loving husband, father, and doting grandfather. Mackie was the proud father of three children; one of whom preceded in him death, Mackie Eaddy. Mackie was employed by Wellman Industries as a department supervisor for over 30 years. His work career included 5 years at Coastal Construction and 10 years at the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center where he retired in 2010. Mackie had a great love for music and playing the bass guitar. One of his biggest prides was being one of the original members of The Golden Tones Gospel Quartet. He thoroughly enjoyed blessing the lives of others with his musical talent. Mackie always displayed a very calm demeanor and a loving disposition. He cherished spending time with his family and his departing words were always, “Remember family, One Love”. He leaves to cherish his lasting memories, his devoted wife, Mary R. Gordon of Charleston, SC, his daughters, Melenda Murphy-Stewart(Rick), of Waldorf, MD; Shanda Hodge(Ronnie), Clarkville, TN; five grandchildren, Elijah, Miles, Keyandre, Tyvon, and Kamari; two brothers, Frankie Gordon(Rosalee) of Hemingway, SC; Glenn Dale Gordon of Atlanta, GA; three sisters, Lula Gordon Memminger(Charles) and Pamela Gordon Waller(Antonio) both Atlanta, GA; Debra Gordon Brown(George) of Hemingway, SC; three sisters-in-law, 5 brothers-in-law; a very special niece, Janet Y. Gordon of Charleston, SC, a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
