Hester McKinnon, Jr, (also known as “Tory”) was born on February 4, 1947 in Fayetteville, N.C. and ascended to his heavenly home on March 16, 2025. He was the second son of Naomi and Hester McKinnon.
Hester, Jr. graduated from E.E. Smith High School, and moved to New York City. After spending a few years in New York, he followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the U.S. Air Force. During his tour of duty, he was injured and honorably discharged from service. He went on to earn an A.A. Degree from LaGuardia Community College and attended The City College of New York. Hester, Jr. worked in the fields of Property Management and Building Maintenance, and was known to be very efficient and hard working. He made friends wherever he went. In the course of time, he met and married his loving wife Gwendolyn (“Gwen”) Moody. Hester, Jr. loved God. He was a faithful and devoted member of New Covenant Temple, where he served in many ways. He eventually became an ordained Deacon and an Apprentice Minister. He was a fixture in the neighborhood, and well-known and loved in the community.
Hester, Jr. loved his family. He was preceded in death by his father, his mother, his sister Carrol and his brother James Earl. He leaves to mourn him his loving wife; his daughter Regina Swinson; his sons Conrad Leach, Jerome Adams and Osei Adams; 16 grandchildren;
his brother John Willie McKinnon; his sister Dorothy Mae Jones; and a host of family and friends, including nephews Robert Lamont McKinnon and Shawn McKinnon, and niece Deborah McKinnon, the three of whom held a special place in his heart. He will be missed.
