Mrs. Veronica "Vickie" Swann Nance, 73, of Durham, NC, passed away Tuesday, October 20, 2020, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC after a long and valiant battle with metastatic breast cancer. Vickie was born in Philadelphia, PA on November 28, 1946, reared in Roxboro, NC and made her home in Durham, NC. She graduated from Person County High School, Roxboro, NC, Class of 1964.
Vickie worked as a Certified Nurse's Assistant and Medical Technician for many years until her health declined. She had an infectious smile and kind heart. Her positive attitude during her battle with cancer was a testament to her strength and character. She never complained.
Vickie was preceded in death by her mother, Janie Swann Clayton, step-father Theodore Clayton, grandparents Bud and Mary Curry Swann, aunt Stella Swann, first cousin Sheila Dargan Bowman. Vickie is survived by her husband, Ronald Nance of the home and son Victor Nance of Durham, NC. She will be lovingly remembered by her sister Featla Swann of New Rochelle, NY and her aunt Minnie Swann Paylor of Roxboro, NC; niece Tarsheen Jackson and her husband Jonathan of Fairfield, CT; great-niece Jaela Lurry and great-nephew Ishmel Lurry of Fairfield, CT; first cousins who were more like siblings to her: Christiana Herring and her husband Carl of Roxboro, NC, Sonja Paylor Burton and her husband Cornell of Durham, NC, Marcella Paylor Carlton and her husband Daryl of Durham, NC, Rufus Paylor, Jr, of Durham, NC, Barry Dargan and his wife Carrie of Timberlake, NC, and Felicia Swann of Mebane, NC. Vickie was also loved by her cousins Dr. Sean Herring and his son Jeremy of Springfield, MO, Tisha Herring and her son Jonas of Durham, NC, and Lany Bowman and Amy Bowman and her son Jonathan of Danbury, CT.
Vickie was also loved and will be missed by her many extended family members to include the descendants of Fletcher and Ninnie Coleman Swann of Yanceyville, NC, Johnny and Hattie Curry Torain of Roxboro, NC, Jim and Cora Curry Pulliam of Albany, NC, Jasper and Jenny Robinson of Roxboro, NC, and Earlie and Lucy Ann Bradsher of Roxboro, NC. She is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at Duke Cancer Center and the Brian Center of Southpoint for the compassionate care given to Vickie during her illness. Due to COVID-19, there will be no funeral. The family will celebrate her life and mourn her passing in private.
