Sandra Christine Smith Hairston, daughter of the late Jim Henry Smith and Nellie Hogue Smith, was born January 20, 1950 in Danville, VA. She departed this life Thursday, February 4, 2021 in Durham, NC.
She was raised on the family farm in Pelham, NC, where she helped raised tobacco and tended livestock. She graduated from Caswell County High School, where she was a member of the band. She also graduated cum laude from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University with a BS in Business Administration. While at A&T, she enjoyed competing as a member of the A&T Karate Dojo.
Sandra was a woman of strong faith and was actively involved in bible studies and prayer groups. At many of the churches she attended, she taught youth Sunday school and vacation bible school, directed Christmas pageants, and was a youth group leader. Sandra’s car was always stocked with books, school supplies, and toys, where she fulfilled her real passion of giving to children. She enjoyed sewing, music, and growing flowers. She worked with her husband, performing administrative work in their business, Hairston Builders.
Those left to cherish her memory include: her husband of 49 years, Larry Hairston of Durham, NC; her two daughters, Tiffany Hairston and Alicia Hairston of Durham, NC; her brother, William Smith of Long Beach, CA; her niece, Lateefah Smith of Long Beach, CA; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 8, 2021, 11:00 am in the chapel of American Cremation & Funeral Service. Burial will follow at Glennview Memorial Park Cemetery.
