Christine Ann Gebhardt, born May 27, 1948, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2021. She was predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Marion Gebhardt, and her sister, Linda (Gebhardt) Willis. She is survived by her niece, Tracey Campbell, nephew, Scott Willis, and their families. Additionally, she is survived by her goddaughter, Ardyn Flynt, and her circle of close friends that she considered family.
Christine was born and raised in New Brunswick, NJ, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Marietta College. After receiving her Master of Science in Education, she started her career in New York City. She spent several years as an educator and administrator in the public school system, with a focus on special needs students. Afterwards, she transitioned to the news media, working for WPIX. It was here that she covered three Presidential Conventions and became the Managing Editor and Executive Producer of the Independent News Network.
Educating others was always her true passion and calling, and she eventually returned to it, spending nearly three decades in the North Carolina Public School system as a teacher. She focused on special needs and teaching English as a Second Language.
Christine was an active member of Immaculate Conception Church, Durham Democratic Women, and her community, and she established many friendships and strong bonds with the people around her. She had an avid interest in the arts throughout her life. There was a special place in her heart for rescue dogs, and for many years she had one by her side. She was the proud rescue mom to Otto and Luna, and her beloved Pete, who was by her side until the end. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to any of the following: Pet Wagon, Independent Animal Rescue, and the Durham Arts Council.
A memorial service will be held on January 8, 2022, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church located at 810 W Chapel Hill Street.
