Service for Nellie Wright Butler, 82, of 1180 Wolf Trail, Orangeburg, SC will be held 11:00 am Saturday, March 19, 2022 at Simmons Funeral Home of Santee, 8824 Old Number Six Highway, Santee, SC 29142 with Reverend Diana Davis officiating.
Mrs. Nellie Wright Butler was born in Orangeburg County, SC, on September 29, 1939, to the late Caesar Yeadon and the late Lillian Ella Nesbitt Yeadon. She departed this earthly life on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, at the Jolley Acres Healthcare Center in Orangeburg, SC.
Nellie was a graduate of Central High School Cross, SC, Class of 1957. At an early age, she joined the St. Matthews AME Church of Cross, SC, and later moved to Newark, New Jersey, and joined St. James AME Church. At St. James AME, Nellie served on the Steward Board and Co-Ed Usher Board.
Nellie was joined in holy matrimony to Jerome Wright in 1959, and after he passed away in 1970, Nellie married Lilton L. Butler on August 9, 1980. Nellie didn’t have any children; however, she devoted a life time of support and love in the raising of her youngest brother, Joseph Yeadon, who moved in with Nellie when he was seven years old. Nellie and Joseph had a special bond, although they were siblings, Nellie was the only mother-figure that he had ever known, as their mother, Lillian Ella, passed away the day after Joseph’s first birthday. Nellie and Joseph treated, respected, and loved each other as mother and son.
Nellie was employed with Jergen Lotion Company as a line supervisor for many years. After leaving Jergens, she began a career with the Newark Labors Union - Local 1153 in 1988 as an Office Administrator. She worked there for 14 years until she retired and had her dream home built in Charleston, SC. While living in Charleston, SC Nellie joined Ebenezer AME Church, where she was a devoted and loyal member. Nellie was also an exceptional cook, and everyone enjoyed her delicious, down home meals, especially her chocolate cakes, which were always made with love. Nellie also enjoyed traveling and cruising with her husband, Lilton and spending time with family.
Nellie was preceded in death by her husband: Lilton; sister: Agnes, four brothers: Lawrence, Tom, Johnny, and Russell; and niece, Kathy, and nephew, Eric.
