Funeral Services for Mr. Rogie D. Nelson, 52, of 5 Barnely Court, Columbia will be held 1:30pm, Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, 805 Harvin Street, Sumter, SC, with interment to follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

Mr. Nelson will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service.

Rogie Dewyne Nelson departed this earthly life on Monday, December 2nd, 2019 at Prisma Health Richland Hospital, Columbia South Carolina.

Rogie was born in Sumter, SC on March 22, 1967 to Elizabeth Nelson and the late Elijah Nelson Sr. Rogie graduated from Sumter High School, class of 1985 and received a Bachelors of Arts Degree from Coastal Carolina, Conway, SC.

At an early age, he joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. Rogie worked at SCDOT for 10 years and his most recent job was with the S.C. Commission for Minority Affairs. Rogie also worked part-time as a realtor at Asset Realty, Columbia, South Carolina.

Rogie married his high school sweetheart Susie Singleton whom he loved and adored. She was the apple of his eyes for 29 years. In this union, they had two sons, Rogie II and Jerrod, that meant the world to him. Rogie encouraged and supported them to strive for the best and reach for their dreams. He was very proud of the young men they became and their accomplishments. Rogie shared his values to his sons; unconditional love, honesty and unselfishness, which made him “Father of the Year”. He was a great father that dearly loved his family.

He leaves to cherish loving memories; his wife, Susie Nelson of the home; two sons, Rogie Nelson II, Los Angeles, California and Jerrod Nelson, who is a student at Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina; mother, Elizabeth Nelson, Sumter, South Carolina; two sisters, Debra D. Bradley of Sumter, South Carolina and Brenda (Willie) Shannon, Dalzell, South Carolina; two brothers, Elijah Jr. (Lisa) Nelson and Derrick L. Nelson, both of Sumter, South Carolina. His mother-in-law Ida Brantley of Sumter, South Carolina. Four sisters-in-law; Wanda Richburg, Columbia, South Carolina, Rosa Hamilton and Sandy (Otis) Brown, both of Sumter, South Carolina and Patricia Nelson, Cassatt, South Carolina; one brother-in-law, James (Dorcus) Singleton, Sumter, South Carolina. A host of loving nieces; nephews; cousins and friends.

He was proceeded in death by his maternal grandmother, Bertha Bynum; his father, Elijah Nelson Sr.; a brother, Wendell Nelson and a sister Beverly O. Washington.

Mr. Nelson passed away on Monday, Dec. 2, 2019, at Prisma Health Richland Hospital, Columbia.

Family and friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. daily at the residence of his wife, Susie Nelson, 5 Barnely Court, Columbia, and from 4 to 9 p.m. daily at the home of his mother, Elizabeth Nelson, 101 Orange St., Sumter, or Simmons Funeral Home of Santee.
