Obituary For Alphonso Johnson Jr.

Alphonso “Al” Johnson, Jr. was born in McCormick, South Carolina on October 11, 1935. On September 2, 2019 our beloved one, Al, suddenly went home to be with the Lord. He was the oldest son of the Alphonso and Albertha Johnson, both who preceded him in death as well as his brother, James Thomas Johnson.

In 1940, Alphonso’s parents, along with him, moved to Virginia where he was raised. During his early years, Alphonso enjoyed playing with his neighborhood friends, Oliver Johnson, Bill Garnett, Mack Leslie and his uncle, Charles Talbert, at the playground and in the backyard.

Al attended and graduated from Armstrong High School. He entered the United States Army in 1958 where he served his country; two years active and four years’ reserves. Al perfected his barbering skills by cutting the hair of his fellow servicemen. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1964. In 1960 after separating from the Army, he went to work for Lafayette Pharmacy as a delivery driver. Lastly, Al finished his work career at Westvaco where he worked for years 34 and retired in 1998.

Alphonso is survived by two sons: Anthony W. Johnson and Alan M. Johnson (Shelley); grandchildren, Tenika, Brandon, and Deion Johnson; great-grandchild, Karvell Johnson; siblings, Janelle Byrd, Gladys Johnson of Detroit, MI, Carolyn Carter and Nathaniel “Roosevelt” Johnson of Southfield, MI; a devoted friend, Carl Wendell Hicks, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other friends.

A viewing will be held from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. Monday, September 16, 2019 at Wilson & Associates Funeral Service - East Chapel, 5008 Nine Mile Road, Richmond, VA 23223 where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2019.

Interment will be private.
