Mr. Andrew Hunter, 82, of Chicago, IL formerly of Ft. Mitchell, AL passed Tuesday, March 4, 2025 in Chicago, IL.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. EST on Saturday, March 22 2025 at St. John AME Church, Ft. Mitchell, AL with Dr. Isaac Hudson, officiating.Burial in church cemetery. Public viewing is 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST on Friday, March 21, 2025.

Andrew Hunter was born on June 15, 1942 in Ft. Mitchell, AL to parents Harvey and Rachel Hunter as the Seventh of Eight Children. Affectionately known as “Chunk” to his Family and Friends, he grew up helping his family on their farm raising beans, corn, and cotton as most African American families did in those times to help support themselves. Every morning Chunk would start his day by feeding the Animals on the farm before heading off to elementary school.

After finishing elementary school, Chunk then enrolled at Mt. Olive High School in Ft. Mitchell, AL. Chunk was Vice-President of his Senior Class and participated in many school Organizations, and also played Football, Basketball, and Baseball. Chunk was a Captain and key member of the first Mt. Olive Football team and he was also Captain of the Basketball team and was instrumental in leading the team to their first State Tournament in Montgomery, AL. After graduating from Mt. Olive, Chunk then enrolled at Benedict College in Columbia, SC on a scholarship where he continued playing Sports. Many of his college teammates continued to stay in touch throughout the years and would travel back to Benedict College during Homecoming and Alumni Weekends.

In 1965, Chunk relocated to Chicago, IL with the help of his brothers James (“Bro”) and Johnny (“Coot”) who already living and working in Chicago. He moved in with his brother James and immediately began working at Chicago Faucet. While working at Chicago Faucet his co-worker, Caliph Wyatt who was dating a nice woman named Christine Williams, introduced him to Christine’s twin sister Ernestine Williams. Chunk and Ernestine married in 1968 and soon after had two children, Andrew Jr and ErnNesha, and purchased their first home on the south side of Chicago. In 1983, Chunk decided to become an Owner/Operator and purchased his first Peterbilt Truck & Trailer and started his own company, Hunter Trucking Company Inc., hauling steel from various steel companies in the Chicagoland area. Chunk received numerous driving awards for his Driving Record and his Professionalism on the job.

Chunk enjoyed cooking and could always be found Baking, Grilling, or Smoking his food to enjoy. He was an avid Sports fan and loved being Outdoors and performing many activities that allowed him to be outside. After retiring, he enjoyed spending even more time at his brother Johnny’s home in Chicago who lived nearby and reliving and reminiscing about their old times growing up in Ft. Mitchell / Phenix City. Every summer he loved traveling back down south to Ft. Mitchell to “Catch Some Shade” as he liked to call it. Chunk had a unique ability to remember everyone that lived in Ft. Mitchell, what part of town they grew up in, everyone they were related to, and eventually how they were related to him. He truly loved all of the people from Ft. Mitchell and believed in never forgetting where you came from and passing that down to his kids.

Chunk loved his Children very much and was always there for them whenever they needed him and he was very proud of their Accomplishments and Achievements in life.

Chunk passed away on March 4th, 2025 at the age of 82 years old.

Chunk is survived by his children; Son, Andrew Hunter, Jr (Danielle) of Lockport, IL, and Daughter ErnNesha (Marcell) Kerr of Atlanta, GA; Four Grandchildren, Jalen, Jasmyn, Kinaya, and Kiyani; One brother, Johnny Hunter, Chicago, IL; 14 Nephews; 12 Nieces; One Godbrother and Best Friend Turner (Gloria) Hughes, and a host of Cousins, Family Members, and Friends.
