Thelma Moffitt DeVeaux, a phenomenal woman, was born in the early 20th century in Allendale, South Carolina. The youngest child of her parents, the late Samuel and Julia Moffitt; she was a graduate of Benedict College where she earned a Bachelor of Education. Her educational experience includes post graduate studies at SC State College and Claflin University. She was the widow of James DeVeaux, Jr. with whom she shared 37 years of marriage until his death in 1990.
Mrs. DeVeaux was born to be an educator and that she was. Her teaching career began in Macedonia School, Gifford, SC in 1947. Numerous teaching positions followed: Antioch School, Camp Branch, SC, North District Training School, Varnville, SC, Yemassee Elementary School, and Fennell Elementary School of Yemassee, SC.
Her religious affiliations in her lifetime were: Happy Home Baptist Church, Allendale, SC, John's Chapel United Methodist Church, Yemassee, SC, Family Worship Center, Yemassee, SC, and Church of God, Varnville, SC.
As a community advocate and worker, Mrs. DeVeaux played an integral part in local, state, and national politics.
Mrs. DeVeaux no longer has biological family members; however, she has adopted many daughters, (including her caregiver, Marelyn Huggins-Murdaugh) sons, grandchildren, nieces and extended family.

The Interment will conclude in the DeVeaux Cemetery of Yemassee, SC.
It has been requested that all “students” of Mrs. DeVeaux, adorn their attire for the service with YELLOW corsages/ribbons for ladies and boutonniere/ribbons for men.
