Elizabeth Morehead Jumper, 97, of Eden, NC passed Tuesday, March 4, 2025. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 15, 2025, at Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, 512 Henry Street, Eden, NC . The “Celebration of Life” will begin at 11:00 a.m. with interment following at Eden Gardens Cemetery , 161 Shady Grove Road, Eden, NC .
On March 4, 2025, Elizabeth Morehead Jumper was called to be with God. She was one of nine children born to James and Sallie Morehead on July 13, 1927, in Gary, West Virginia. She was preceded into eternal rest by her husband, Robert Allen Jumper, Sr., daughters Debra Jumper Dodd and Jewell Jumper Henderson, brothers James, Curtis, Robert and Porter Morehead and sisters Katherine (Pearle) Mary, Lillie, and Sallie. At a young age, the Morehead family moved to Eden, North Carolina where Elizabeth resided for her full life.
Elizabeth graduated from Douglass High School in 1945 and on August 2, 1947, was married to the late Robert Allen Jumper, Sr. From this union were four children, the late Debra Dodd (1948-1997), and the late Jewell Jumper Henderson (1950-2004). She is survived by son Robert Allen Jumper, Jr. (Bobby) (Marva) and Steve Jumper (Barbara) and Son In-Law James.
Robert Allen Jumper, Sr. and Elizabeth shared 26 years of joyful marriage until his untimely death in 1973. Elizabeth remained a widow for the next 52 years of her life. Elizabeth adored her grandchildren, beginning with Valeria “Val” Adams the oldest of seven, followed by the late Michael Jumper, Tim Jumper, Qena Dodd Jennings, Jamel “Nick” Adams, Steven Jumper, and Maya Jumper, all of which made special childhood memories at Mama’s house. Elizabeth also leaves behind 15 beloved great grandchildren, including 3-month-old River and Cleo. The Jumper household on Ellerbe Court was the place where her siblings, nieces and nephews from across the country who had moved away returned to reunite with their loved ones and have a good time. Tony, Cloria, Tonette, Alfonso, Gail, Mickey, Butch, Savannah, Ann, Sandra, Michael, Larry, Maurice, Valarie and the list goes on. Robert and Aunt “Libbis” were gracious hosts.
Elizabeth was the first Black female employee at what was then Fieldcrest Mills. She often recalled receiving a personal phone call from the company President asking her to join the company and assuring her that she would be protected from any unfair treatment because of her race. She went on to spend the balance of her professional career with the Eden YMCA where she was the director of Eden’s first public swimming pool in a Black community. After the Lewis Street pool closed, Elizabeth went on to finish her professional career at the YMCA’s main location in Eden.
Elizabeth was a lifelong member of the Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Eden, NC where she served numerous leadership roles for over six decades including Senior Usher Board, Missionary Circle, Pastor’s Aide, Vacation Bible School, and Sister Circle. Elizabeth was a proud member of The Order of the Eastern Star whose mission is charity, service and fellowship.
