On Tuesday, March 4, 2025, Mother Nellie Mae Hairston 101, of Perkins Dr., Martinsville, VA transitioned from this earthly life to eternal rest at her residence. She was born on July 4, 1923, in Henry County, VA to the late Webster Penn and Elvira Stone Penn.
In addition to her parents, Mother Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, David Hairston; two sons, David Adlai Hairston and Conrad E. Hairston; one sister, Geneva Penn, and seven brothers, Jesse Penn, Charles Penn, Frank Penn, Earnest Penn, George Penn, Rufus Penn and Harry Penn.
Mother Nellie was a faithful member of Jerusalem Free Deliverance Church where she served as the church Mother. She retired from Memorial Hospital of Martinsville/Henry County with ten years of dedicated service.
Those left to cherish her memory includes, four daughters, Maxine Spencer (Jerome) of Martinsville, VA, Vergie Dubois of Raleigh, NC, Agnes Hairston of South Plainfield, NJ and Brenda Bowles of Locust, NC; two sons, Stacey Hairston (Belinda) of Martinsville, VA and Jimmy Hairston (Connie) of Rahway, NJ; fourteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A visitation service will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at 11 a.m. with the funeral service at 12 noon at The Greater International Pentecostal Assembly Building, 980 Carver Rd., Martinsville, VA with Bishop James Perkins, Eulogist. Interment will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens, 869 Parkway Dr., Martinsville, VA. The family will receive friends at the residence, 64 Perkins Dr., Martinsville, VA.
A public viewing will be held on Friday, March 14, 2025, at Hairston Funeral Home, 301 Fayette St., Martinsville between the hours of 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Live streaming of the funeral service will be available at Hairston Funeral Home live via Facebook.
