Laney L. Heard

02/11/1925 - 03/01/2025

With loving memories, it is announced Mother Laney Lee Heard, a cherished matriarch, transitioned into eternity peacefully at her residence on March 1, 2025, at the blessed age of 100. Gracing the world with her presence, she was born on February 11, 1925, in the tranquil town of Camp Hill, Alabama, the beloved daughter of the late Grady and Mary Bell Mackey.

Mother Laney, as she was affectionately and respectfully known, filled the hearts of many with her unwavering love and nurturing spirit. A devoted member of Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, she served selflessly on the nurse's and mission ministries, embodying the essence of compassion and service. Her presence in the lives of those she touched will be deeply missed.

Maintaining a loving and welcoming home were always her main priorities, however Mother Laney extended her maternalistic nature into the community as well. She was also an early childhood caregiver at the former Neighborhood House Community Center in Campbell, guiding the young hearts entrusted to her care with tenderness and wisdom. Her contributions to the community shaped the future of many children, instilling in them values that will endure.

Laney is survived by her loving daughter, Vivian (Arthur L.) Holmes, along with her devoted son Lorenzo (Donna) Heard, and daughter Debra (Curtis) Luckey, and daughter-in-love, Sandra Heard, sister Mary Williams, brother Joe F. Mackey and sister-in-love Mary Mackey. She was a guiding light for her family, nurturing her beloved grandchildren—Yolanda, Valerie, Jason, Curtis, and Lisa Nicole—along with her cherished five great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and an abundance of family and friends.

Mother Laney is reunited with her husband, James, who preceded her in death, on March 14, 1996, after sharing an enduring bond of love and partnership. She was also preceded in death by her parents, son Lance, grandson Arthur Holmes III, three sisters Thelma Jackson, Annie Bell Griffin, Willie V. Holloway and three brothers Huria, Grady Jr and William. —who have been welcomed into eternal rest.

As we bid farewell to a remarkable woman, let us cherish her memories, her laughter, and her unconditional love—a legacy that will forever resonate within our hearts. Join us as we gather to honor her life and legacy, we invite you to join us for a public viewing on March 8, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in her beloved church, Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, 1210 Himrod Ave., in Youngstown.

In this time of remembrance and reflection, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff of Akesko Hospice for their compassionate care in her final days.
