REFLECTION OF LIFE:
Alicestean (PeeWee) Carter was born March 6, 1946, in Shaw, Mississippi to the late Robert (Chunk) Washington and Narsis (Sis)Washington. Alicestean is the 4th child of six children born to this union. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Green Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Shaw, Mississippi.
Alicestean graduated from McEvans High School in Shaw, MS. As a young woman, Alicestean married William Carter on January 17, 1965. From this union she birthed three sons: Dwan Carter, Detric Carter and Shali Carter. As a loving mother, Alicestean raised Tijuanda Hillie as her own daughter. She also extended her family by legally adopting Devontae Carter. She has a special place in her heart for many children.
In 1990, she united with Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church of Lexington, Mississippi under the leadership of the late Pastor Brooks. She later served under Bishop Raymon Carter as the assistant secretary of Sunday School, treasurer of the usher auxiliary, and faithful prayer warrior on the Women’s Prayer Ministry Team.
Alicestean Carter was a blessing to the entire Holmes County, where Tchula was her home base. She was a gifted master designer, entrepreneur, planner and coordinator of many programs and events. As a resident of Tchula, Mississippi, Alicestean Carter served as a Physical Education Teacher for over 30 years at Tchula Attendance Center, currently S.V. Marshall Elementary School where she retired in 2001. Alicestean earned a Bachelor’s from Mississippi Valley State University and a Master’s from Jackson State University. In October 1990, she received her cosmetology license. She was also a self-made entrepreneur. She utilized her creative gifts and abilities to provide products, such as holiday gift baskets, sewing and decorating services in many forms to her community through her business “Carter’s Designs”. After retirement, Alicestean did not want to sit at home so she worked as a Medical Records Clerk at Mallory Community Health Center. Alicestean returned to Holmes County Consolidated School District where she taught a Beginners Sewing Adult Night Course until her health failed in December 2024.
Alicestean was an extraordinary wife, mother, grandmother who loved her family “unconditionally “. She was a teacher for Saints Academy in Lexington, Mississippi. She was the founder of the Unique Social Club. She was the founder and manager of Alicestean’s Fashionetta and modeled her clothing all around the Delta. She had a love for sewing and took great pride in being a master seamstress who could visualize a design and bring it to reality. She created many beautiful prom and wedding dresses for her family and friends. She also designed, embroidered and monogrammed for social clubs, schools and various organizations. Alicestean Carter was known to many as a surrogate mother, mentor, influencer and community leader. She was a woman of Godly character who consistently acted with love and integrity while always putting the needs of others first. She lived a poured-out life as a woman who opened her heart and hands to all. Alicestean Carter, lovingly called “PeeWee” by family and friends will forever be remembered as a Proverbs 31 woman of great worth and value!
Alicestean PeeWee Carter was proceeded in death by her sisters Retha Mae Shelton and Barbara Slaughter.
Alicestean (PeeWee) Carter departed this life for eternity on January 5, 20251. She leaves to cherish her memories, Her Husband, William Carter; Her Children, Dwan Carter of Kosciusko, MS, Detric Carter( Barbara Faye) and Shali Carter(Bedricka) of Petal, MS, and Tijuanda Hillie of Tchula, MS; Her Siblings: Eugene Washington of Bellwood, IL, Dorothy Washington of Oak Park, IL, Gloria Washington of Petal, MS, Robert Washington Jr. (Lela) of Shaw, MS; Two Godsons: Antonious Redmond and DeJohn Hampton, 18 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and a host of Nieces, Nephews, Family and Friends.
