Milton “Joe” Ferguson was born September 24, 1941, to the parentage of the late Jessie Ferguson and Leola Granville Ferguson in Warner Robins, Georgia. He graduated from the Houston County Training School and enjoyed playing baseball for the African American minor league baseball team called the Warner Robins Jets. During the Vietnam War, he was drafted in the United States Army and continued to proudly serve his country for 21 years, stationed throughout the United States and abroad. After retiring from the military, he matriculated at Troy State University and obtained an associate’s degree. He later retired from a second career as a Federal Civil Servant.
Milton, an introvert and man of few words, quickly became an extrovert when speaking of his children and grandchildren. He frequently traveled hours to attend the grandchildren’s school and sporting events. He was a strong disciplinarian and exemplified a tremendous work ethic, with a fierce commitment to his family and career. He instilled these values in his children and grandchildren. He was always willing to help anyone in need and never expected anything in return. His favorite pastimes were spending time with his family, going to Destin for summer vacations, working in his garden, deep-sea fishing, and visiting The Ferguson Memorial Park named after of his grandfather. Lastly, he was a die-hard Dallas Cowboy fan.
Because of his belief in Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior, Milton made weekly trips from Columbus, Georgia to Warner Robins, Georgia to attend his church, The Agape Outreach Ministries under the tutelage of his nephew, the late Pastor Daron D. Lee. After relocating from Columbus, Georgia, he along with his wife, joined the Warner Robins CME Church.
In 1964, he united in Holy Matrimony to Vircy Anne Lee. From this union, God richly blessed them with two adoring children, Coqueese and Milton Jr.
He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Georgia J. Ferguson, siblings Eddie Ferguson, Mathew Ferguson, Elijah Ferguson, Ada Fuqua , Pinkie McDow, Betty Roberts, Arlinda Ross, and mother and father-in-law, Sylvester and Ada Lee.
