Obituary For Mary Inabinett Mack

With deepest sympathy, we announce the passing of our beloved Mary Inabinett Mack on October 7, 2024. A native of St. Helena Island, SC in the Anne Fripp community, Mary was the third child of eight from a tobacco farm in Colleton County, South Carolina. Mrs. Mack lived a long, fulfilling and prosperous life filled with her love and passion for her family, her career, and art.

A Registered Nurse by profession, Mrs. Mack earned her Bachelor’s degree from Queens College in New York, Master’s degree from Fordham University and a Certificate of Health Administration from Queens-CUNY. She continued her studies at Columbia University upon returning to St. Helena Island, SC. Mrs. Mack enjoyed a healthcare career that spanned almost 50 years and retired in 2004 as the Deputy Executive Director of Beaufort Jasper Hampton Comprehensive Health Services (BJHCHS).

Mary brought healing to the South Carolina Lowcountry in a different way. For almost 30 years she was the owner of The Red Piano Too Art Gallery, where she embraced local artists, cultivated the careers of new artists and exhibited her own works of art depicting women and water of the low country. Mrs. Mack helped newcomers and visitors from all over the world understand, appreciate and embrace the beauty of black art and culture and notably the Gullah culture. Her love for art and exposing others to the beauty of the low country earned her the 2020 South Carolina Elizabeth O’ Verna Governor’s Award for the Arts.
