My wife Dorothy and I met Mattie and her husband John (whom we referred to as Hoppie) in 1965 when I was stationed in Japan. We became great friends. Although we lived on Johnson Air Base, and John was stationed at Johnson Air Base, Mattie and I worked at sites on Yokota Air Base which was located about seven miles from Johnson Air Base. Mattie rode with me each morning to Yokota Air Base. We worked on weekends at the Johnson Air Base Chapel. Mattie and Hoppie taught us to play Scrabble, a game we still enjoy playing today. After Hoppie retired from the Air Force and moved to Alexandria, even though I was still in the Air Force, when I retired and moved near Fredericksburg, VA, we kept up our close relationship. Mattie and Hoppy were a 'great' couple and it was a blessing that we got an opportunity to meet them and become friends with them. Rest in Peace Mattie, rest in peace. Over the years you have touched many lives, Loved and befriended many people. REST IN PEACE, MATTIE. (FRANK & DOROTHY WHITE)

If I let her my friend Mattie could talk my ear off. But she was kind, generous, open-hearted and embracing of everything that life offered up. She was wise yet funny, full of joy, loved to laugh and up for adventures. In her 70s we went on a trip to Germany to tour King Ludwig's castles. Everyone on the tour loved being in her company. She was one of the best! My condolences go out to Lauren, Linda and the rest of Mattie's family. She will be missed.
