Dr. Mary B. Thompson was born on June 30,1942 in St. Petersburg, Florida to Katherine B. and Burchette Bivens Sr. She was a devout Christian and loved the Lord. Her Christian values were instilled early from her parents as a member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church. Dr. Mary B. Thompson received her Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Education degree from Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida. Dr. Mary B. Thompson’s dynamic journey of academia started when she worked as a 2nd grade Language Arts Teacher. Her love and drive for the students led her to becoming a teacher for “At Risk” students for seven years. In 1995, she was awarded 30 years of Dedicate Service in Education in the Dade County School System. In 1997, she was awarded the “Make It Happen” Award for Prayer Ministry Leadership. With many years to craft an array of skill sets, this magnificent journey led her to earned of Doctorate of Ministry Degree from the University of Fort Lauderdale in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in May of 2000. She earned numerous awards and accolades along the way. She was the recipient of the Outstanding Leadership Award as well as the Ministerial Leadership award, while working at as Adjunct Faculty at the University of Fort Lauderdale. Later that year, Drs. Dennis and Mary B. Thompson made the decision to move to Georgia. Since her move to Georgia, Dr. Mary B. Thompson worked as the Lead Chaplain at Washington State Prison in Davisboro, GA, for four years, while Co-pastoring the New Way Christian Church, with her husband, in Louisville, Ga.
Dr. Mary B. Thompson loved her family and was preceded in death by her parents (Katherine B. and Burchette Bivens Sr.), her brothers (Michael Bivens and Buchette Bivens Jr.), and her step-son (Dennis Damion Deon Thompson).
Dr. Mary B. Thompson as dutiful, faithful, and a humble servant of the Lord. She leaves her loving husband, Dr. Dennis Thompson; two step-children Adrian (Nicole) Thompson of Tennessee and Dwashon of Missouri; 2 grandchildren Blanche Thompson of Missouri and Jamari Thompson of Tennessee; two sisters, Irene Bivens McCall of Atlanta, Ga, and Deborah Bivens Evans of St. Petersburg, Fl. to cherish her memories.
Dr. Mary B. Thompson was unconditionally loved by those who recognize that grief is the price that is paid when one is loved so much. She will be forever loved by Lois Gordon of Stapleton, Ga, George (Patricia Thompson) of Miami, Fl, Shirley Thompson, Janet (Johnny) Morgan, and Joe (Willie Mae) Thompson of Louisville, Ga, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
Homegoing Celebration will be held Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at the New Hope A.M.E. Church, 11960 Highway 171 N, Louisville, GA. Interment will be held in the church cemetery.
Public viewing will be held Friday, September 6, 2024 from 3:00 to 6:00
