SHAWNTEE’ KAVINA MCBRIDE, daughter of Denise Newby Hargrove and Leslie McBride, was born July 20, 1981 in Brooklyn, New York. She entered her eternal rest on August 10, 2024 at her residence in Richmond, VA.
At an early age she was baptized and joined Jerusalem Baptist Church. She later became a member of Bloom Hill Baptist Church.
Shawntee’ was educated in the Lunenburg and Mecklenburg Counties Public Schools. She was a 1991 graduate of Park View High School and she was in the top ten of her class. Shawntee’ received several awards from the GATE Program (Gifted and Talented Education), All American Scholar (Band) Award, IFLA (International Foreign Language Award), USNBA (United State National Band Award), and NSLA (National Leadership Service Award. She later attended VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) and studied Political Science/Attorney.
Shawntee’ served in the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge as SGT in 2006. She also did a tour in Iraq. She received numerous medals: army achievement medal, army reserve components achievement medal, national defense service medal, army service ribbon, overseas service ribbon, armed forces reserve medal, and global war on terrorism service medal.
In 2015, Shawntee' married Jonathan David Ruthazer.
Shawntee’ was a “people person.” She loved life and people. If she loved you, you knew it because she made you feel you were always # 1 and you felt it. No one was ever going hungry or be homeless on her watch because you would be fed as well as housed by any means necessary. Shawntee’ loved to read, cook, dance, sing, as well as skate. She was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan.
You will be truly missed. If you’ve ever crossed her path, you would never forget her. She was unforgettable. God placed his beautiful angel here to love everyone, like they needed to be loved. You did a magnificent job, SHAWNTEE’!! Rest baby, and know we loved you back. Fly high and never forget that you mattered tremendously.
Shawntee’ leaves to cherish her memory: mother- Denise Newby (Jeffrey) Hargrove, South Hill, VA; father- Leslie McBride; 1 sister- Shannon (Diya) Harris, Richmond, VA; 8 aunts- Majade (Bondelemu) Bey, Drewryville, VA; Jacqueline Newby, Key Port, NJ; Ella Newby, Victoria, VA; Ada Scarborough, Brooklyn, NY, Priscilla Ferrell, Clarksville, VA, LaKeisha Ferrell, Buffalo Junction, VA, Lora Hargrove and Theresa (Josh) Holiman, Henderson, NC; 5 uncles- Forsett (Aisha) Newby and Leonardo Newby, all of Brooklyn, NY; Larry McBride, Richmond, VA; Ron (Tina) Bagley, Kenbridge, VA; Otis (Shirley) Bagley, LaCrosse, VA; grandmothers- Mary Ezell and Roberta McBride both of Brooklyn, NY and Crystal Bagley, Kenbridge, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
