Miriam Porter Hopson, 73, of Lawrenceville, Georgia; formerly of Richmond, Virginia, departed this earth on July 25, 2024. She was born on December 14, 1950 in Prince George, Maryland. She was affectionately known as Cookie, Ma, Buffy, Mimi, Aunt Cookie, Hopson and Mama Cookie. She was a graduate of the Original Armstrong High School and the Medical College of VA’s Nursing School. She retired from MCV after 30 years of service. Miriam opened the self-accredited “Mimi’s Day Care”, which had two graduates, Torrence Artis (godson) and Kelsey Robinson (granddaugher). Graduation requirements included reciting the theme of Mimi’s favorite show, Walker Texas Ranger. (smile) Miriam moved to Georgia to live with her daughter, LaShawn, in February 2018. Her Jamaican Home Care Team (Wakina, Seneica and Norma) assisted in countless ways to make sure that Mimi was well taken care of. In May of 2024, she lost a very dear caregiver, Sylvia Jackson. Additional VIP caregivers were Markita Smith (cousin/bonus daughter) and Kaitlyn Robinson (bonus granddaughter).
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Francis Porter and Marian Mangrum Porter; stepmother, Gwendolyn C. Porter and her sister, Cassandra Felise Porter. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, LaShawn Hopson Robinson (Kevin); granddaughter, Kelsey Robinson; sisters, Valarie Payne and WyJean Porter; niece, Ryan Payne; godson, Torrence Artis; her Hopson Family; former coworkers of MCV’s Main 9 Central and her bonus daughters, Judy Lewis and Tashika Nixon-Williams. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at Scott's Chapel, 116 E. Brookland Park Blvd., Richmond, Virginia. Interment private. Livestreaming at scottsfuneralhome.com
