Doris Thornwell Witherspoon

Doris Thornwell Witherspoon, daughter of the late Dock Thornwell and Mary Massey Thornwell was born April 14, 1942, in Lancaster, SC. She went home to be with the Lord on July 15, 2024, at home surrounded by her family.

Doris received her education in the Lancaster County Schools. At an early age she committed her life to following Christ and became a member of David Stand AME Zion Church. She served faithfully as a Class Leader, Ministry of Kindness President, Choir Member, Kitchen Committee Staff and she taught at Church Summer School Camp.

She was married to Johnnie Ray Witherspoon for 60 years and to this union three children were born. She worked in the Lancaster County School District for 40 years as a paraprofessional for Special Education Children.

She was proceeded in death by three sisters, Miriam Crockett (George), Jessie M. Witherspoon (Clarence) both of Lancaster, SC and Josephine Singleton (Herbert) of Charlotte, NC; five brothers, John Moore Thornwell, James Henry Thornwell (Winstin), Sammie Lee Thornwell, Charlie Lee Thornwell all of Lancaster, SC and Abraham Thornwell of Buffalo, NY.

Those left to cherish her memories are her loving husband, Johnnie Ray Witherspoon; two daughters, Gwyndolyn Hudson (Norman) of Lancaster, SC, April Morrow (Darrell) of Rock Hill, SC and one son Willie Rayfield Witherspoon (Keachia) of Hampton, VA.; one sister Clara Jean Hayden of Lancaster, SC and one brother Tommy Lee Thornwell (Beverly) of Lancaster, SC and Charlotte, NC; three brothers-in law, Clarence Witherspoon of Lancaster, Melvin Witherspoon (Shirley) of Waxhaw, NC and Herbert Singleton of Charlotte, NC; three sisters-in-law, Shirley Royster of Atlanta Ga., Veronica Connor (Albert) of Winston Salem, NC and Sandra Wilkes of Winston Salem, NC: three grandchildren, William Isiah McAfee-Witherspoon of Columbus Ohio, Charisma Hudson of Detroit, MI. and Danielle Heckstall of Hampton, VA; two great grandchildren Jermaine Aldridge and Brayden Heckstall; one special child friend, Knowledge Stevenson ("KJ"); four special friends, Ruby Nell Davis, Odessa Funderburk, Sarah Norwood and Reverend Albert & Mrs. Mary Young all of Lancaster, SC along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends.

Public viewing from 1-2, Funeral Services are 2 pm, Saturday, July 20, 2024 at David Stand AME Zion Church by Reverend Albert Young, officiating Reverend Albert Tucker with burial in Lancaster Memorial Park.

Viewing is 1-5pm Friday at McMullen Funeral Home.
