Obituary For Larry D. Hairston, Sr.

On Saturday, July 6, 2024, Larry Darnell Hairston, Sr. “Skipper” of Jefferson St., Martinsville, VA transitioned from this earthy life at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, VA. He was born in Martinsville, VA on September 24, 1951, to the late Ezra Lee Hairston, Sr and Laura Martin Hairston.

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by one son, Larry Darnell Hairston, Jr.: three brothers, Ezra Lee Hairston, Jr., Lloyd Herman Hairston and Chauncey Hairston; and his foster brother, John D. Martin.

Larry was a member of St. Paul High Street Baptist Church where he served on the Culinary Committee. He was a graduate of Martinsville High School class of 1969. Larry had worked for Bethlehem Restaurant, Eden, NC, and was Executive Chef/owner of LDH Catering with 55 years of cooking experience with different restaurants.

Larry received a certificate of Cooking from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, a Diploma from the Kentucky Fried Chicken Company in 1969, and an Honorary Certificate of Achievement from Chatmoss Country Club, Martinsville, VA. Larry loved golfing, cooking, family time and coloring on his phone.

Those left to cherish his memory include: his children, Larry Darnell Geter “Hank” of Raleigh, NC, DeAngelo Lamar Geter of Martinsville, VA, Larry Darnell Hairston, Jr. “Chip” (Kimberly) of Greensboro, NC, Ryan Oneil Hairston (Quetta) of Martinsville, VA, LaKeisha B. Martin of Martinsville, VA and Anthony Maurice Giles of Axton, VA; two sisters, Lucille “Cille” Hairston and Fibbie Hairston both of Martinsville, VA; companion, Diane Martin of Martinsville, VA; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A visitation service will be held on Friday, July 12, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. with the funeral service at 11 a.m. at St. Paul High Street Baptist Church, 401 Fayette St., Martinsville, VA with Reverend Dr. Matthew Brown, Eulogist. Interment will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens, 869 Parkway Dr., Martinsville, VA. Other times, the family will be receiving friends at the home, 711 Jefferson St., Martinsville, VA between the hours of 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. daily.

A public viewing will be held on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at Hairston Funeral Home, 301 Fayette St., Martinsville, VA between the hours of 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Live streaming available at Hairston Funeral Home live via Facebook.
