Carolyn Jean Boone Todd, M.D., of Midlothian, transitioned to her heavenly rest in the comfort of her home on July 7, 2024. Carolyn was born on December 10,1953 to the late Ethel Boone Watkins. Shortly thereafter, Carolyn was adopted by her great-great aunt, the late Marie Coleman Moore.
Carolyn accepted Christ into her life at an early age. She joined the Morning Star Baptist Church, Windsor, Virginia, where she served dutifully as an usher. At the time of her passing she was a member of the First Baptist Church in Midlothian, Virginia.
Carolyn spent her childhood in Zuni, Virginia. She attended school during a time when integration was new to the Commonwealth. Despite that fact, she was known to be opinionated and vocal about her beliefs. She graduated from Windsor High School and was eager to follow her dream of attending college.
Carolyn received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Virginia State College (now University), Petersburg, Virginia. She went on to Medical College of Virginia (now Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine) to pursue her medical degree. During her medical studies at MCV, she developed a keen interest in sickle cell disease. She actively engaged with the community by visiting churches and public spaces to educate and provide care for individuals affected by the condition. Her outreach extended to public shopping centers, where she regularly conducted blood pressure and cholesterol screenings. Dr. Boone completed her pediatrics residency at Children’s National Medical Center in 1983 and subsequently joined the Public Health Service on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
In 1985, she established a solo pediatric practice in Richmond, Virginia, where she has since cared for thousands of children and multiple generations of families.
As a pioneer in primary care pediatrics, Dr. Boone was the first in Richmond to establish the Reach Out and Read Program. She and her husband created an inviting reading space in the waiting room, adorned with bright primary colors, to encourage children to read while waiting for their appointments. Recognizing the importance of education in managing chronic conditions, Dr. Boone initiated an asthma education program which provided video resources and organized educational sessions for parents. Additionally, she facilitated the scheduling of follow-up appointments with subspecialists before families left her office, alleviating the burden on parents. Dr. Boone made office visits fun for her patients. To make the time pass faster, she provided treats and at times wore costumes.
Dr. Boone continually updated her practice based on the latest medical advancements, methods and trends. Her unwavering dedication and innovative approaches made her a vital asset to the Richmond community and beyond. Known for her tireless work ethic, Dr. Boone's practice thrived due to her deep investment in the health and well-being of her patients and their families. As we celebrate the life of Dr. Carolyn Jean Boone, it is noted, that plans were in place for her to accept an award as The Pediatrician of The Year 2024 by the Pediatrics at the Beach Annual Conference this very weekend. This award highlights her lifetime achievements in medicine.
