MR. RICHARD LEE OLIVER, son of the late Albert and Elizabeth Powell Oliver, was born February 12, 1940 and departed this life Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at VCU- Community Memorial Hospital, South Hill, VA. He was also preceded in death by his oldest daughter- Virginia Jackson; sisters- Mary Crute and Viola Oliver, and great-grandson, Taiveon Gayles.

He was baptized at an early age and joined Union Hill RZUA Church, Baskerville, VA.

Richard attended the Mecklenburg County Public Schools. After schooling he began working at a Ford Dealership in Boydton, VA.

In 1974, Richard joined Union Hill Baptist Church, Chase City, VA and served until his health began to fail. He later became a member of Greenleaf Masonic Lodge #287.

Richard later moved to Richmond, VA for a short period of time where he was employed by Hicks Tire Company. After moving back to Chase City, VA, he attended an Academy school where he received training as a small engine repair technician. He later became employed by Mecklenburg Supply, Chase City, VA for many years until he suffered a back injury.

Richard married three times and had eight children. In 1961, he married Dorothy Jones and they had four children. After her death, he married Evon Roberts and fathered two children. They eventually parted and he married Wanda Staten and they had two children.

Richard enjoyed playing the guitar, singing, watching westerns, and he loved fishing and hunting. He was the guitar player for the gospel groups- The Golden Jubilee and The Pride of Salem.

Richard is survived by his children- Dorothy (Michael) Jones, Youngsville, NC; Richard (LaTasha) Oliver, Keysville, VA; Shirl Fowlkes, Stafford, VA; Derek Staten, Hyattsville. MD; LaRoyal Roberts, Bluffton, SC; Donnell Roberts, Cleveland, OH and Shaun Oliver, Red Oak, VA; his siblings- Nannie Brown, South Hill, VA; James (Pauline) Oliver, Chesterfield, VA; Elijah (Thelma) Oliver, Amelia County, VA and Charles Oliver, Chesterfield, VA; 20 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-granddaughter; devoted friend- Doris Pamplin, South Hill, VA; devoted daughter-in-law, Gloria Edmonds, Clarksville, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other friends.
