Obituary For Leroy Ellis

Leroy Ellis, 72 of Rural Hall, NC , passed Wednesday, July 3, 2024. The family will receive friends from 12 noon ~ 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at First Baptist Church, 700 Highland Ave., Winston Salem, NC 27101 with the service beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Mr. Leroy Ellis, son of the late Deacon Troy Ellis Sr. And Mrs. Everlena Lennon Ellis, was born September 27, 1951 in Whiteville, NC. He departed this life on Wednesday, July 3, 2024. At his home in Rural Hall, NC.

Leroy served our country in the United States Air Force from 1969 until 1973. Shortly thereafter, he went to work for the United States Postal Service where he retired as the Transportation Manager in 2006 after 32 years. Two of his passions were bowling and with his current golf club, The Short Makers for over 20 years.

Leroy loved the Lord and therefore was an active member in his church. He was a faithful and longtime member of Springfield Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC for more than 30 years. He had a strong friendship with Reverend Daniel Sanders, who was his pastor and often times golf buddy. He served on the transportation ministry, drama ministry and was the chairman of the trustee board for several years. He joined the Male Chorus, as he would say, not because he was a singer but because he wanted to be a part of making a joyful noise unto the Lord. He enjoyed the foot stomping, hand clapping songs of the great gospel groups. This music brought joy to his heart and peace to his soul.

After his marriage to Kathy, the woman he love for almost 50 years and subsequent move to Rural Hall, they joined First Baptist Church, Highland Avenue. His vow to her was that “We will not be pew sitters.” His service was evidenced by joining the men's choir, the Dream Team media ministry and the trustee ministry.

Leroy is preceded in death by his parents and brother Howard Lennon.

Left to cherish his memories: His loving and devoted wife; Kathleen Ellis, two sons; Quinn Choice (Cerrrika) of Atlanta, GA and Desmond Ellis (Chrisley) of Raleigh, NC, one daughter; Syreeta Carter of Walkertown, NC. Two brothers; Orlando Lennon (Millie) and Troy Ellis, Jr. (Carolyn). Two sisters; Everdel Bullock (Doug) and Valeria Southern, several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.

Condolences to the Ellis family on the loss of Leroy. He was always prepared in meetings and had his own sense of humor. He talked a lot about his little guy (grandson) that he'd be tied up with and would not be able to attend a meeting because he thought 'y'all don't want him to be in the meeting.' We will miss working with him at First Baptist Church on the Trustee Board and looking back up at him on the sound system. Danny and Debora Freeman
