Obituary For Fred J. Belcher

Fred J. Belcher, 83, of West Fayette Street, Martinsville, VA, departed from life on Earth and entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, July 2, 2024. He was born November 24, 1940, to the late Nannie Kate Cabiness and Pannell Belcher in Martinsville, VA.

In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by three brothers, Leon Cabiness, Jake Agnew, and Gerald Belcher; one sister, Brenda Rudd, and one grandson, Jamarion Eggleston.


Fred also known as “Bubba” and “Fairway Fred” on the golf course. He graduated from Albert Harris High School in 1959. After high school he served in the United States Army until his honorable discharge.

Following his honorable discharge, he returned home and was employed by Smurfit Stone Container where he worked for over forty years until his retirement. He attended Fayette Street Christian Church in Martinsville, VA. Fred was an avid golfer for 50 years and made a name for himself playing golf. He made many friendships on the golf course.

Those left behind to cherish his loving memory are his devoted wife of 59 years Phyllis “Candy” Belcher of the home; two sons, Jeffrey (Wanda) Belcher and Sean Belcher both of Martinsville, VA; Grandson, Todd Belcher of Martinsville, VA; his extended family, two daughters, Keela Eggleston and Dreama Eggleston both of Martinsville, VA; six grandchildren, Ja’Mere Ja’Maga, Ja’Da, Kyisere, Jakare, Jayse Eggleston; one sister, Gracie Tidline; two brothers, William Agnew of Martinsville, VA and Pannell Belcher of Roanoke, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

A visitation will be held Thursday, July 11, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. with the funeral service at 12 noon at the C.R.V. Memorial Chapel at Hairston Funeral Home, 301 Fayette St., Martinsville, VA with Bishop Bobby Agnew, Eulogist and Pastor Calvin D. Curry, Presiding. Interment will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens, 869 Parkway Dr., Martinsville, VA.

A public viewing will be held on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at Hairston Funeral Home between the hours of 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Other times, the family will be receiving friends at 314 Greyson Street Martinsville, VA 241112, between the hours of 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. daily.
