Obituary For Willie 'Jerry' Powell

WILLIE CLYDE POWELL, known affectionately as Jerry, passed away on June 20, 2024, at the age of 69 in Thomaston, GA. Born on November 14, 1954, in Talbotton, GA, Jerry lived a life marked by dedication to his community and love for his family.

Jerry graduated from Central High School and spent many years working as a machinist at Martha Mill, where he was respected for his skill, work ethic and always having his shirt tucked-in.

Jerry joined New Hope Baptist Church at an early age. He had an easy unbothered spirit.

Jerry's hobbies included watching tennis (Serena Williams was his favorite player), watching every wrestling match on TV (WOO! Ric Flair was his favorite), and cooking and baking. Jerry was known for his banana pudding, potato salad, grilled chicken and baked hamburgers. His green thumb brought both beauty and bounty to his garden, and his lawn was as meticulously cared for as his friendships.

He is survived by his son, Jeffrey Maine of Macon, GA ; Brothers: Walter Powell (Leatha) of Decatur, GA and Jesse Powell (Alma) of Jonesboro, GA; Sisters: Irene Clark, Catherine Graddy of Atlanta, GA, Jeannette Holmes (Kenneth) of Thomaston, GA , and Dorothy Carter (Jessie) of Tyrone, GA; and devoted niece Rita Powell of Glendale, AZ and nephew Eric Smith of Hampton, GA. A host of nieces, nephews, and long-term friend Mabeline Pennyman and other friends.

Jerry was preceded in death by his daughter, Contessa Powell; Parents, IJ and Jennie Powell; Brothers: Willie Frank Powell, Charlie Powell, JL Powell, and Bobby Powell; and Sisters: Mary Ann Rucker, Vonnie Warren, and Lula Powell.

His life and legacy will be remembered and celebrated by all who knew him.
