Betty Jones

Deacon Betty R. Jones was born to the late Johnnie B. Jones and the late Arrie B. McClendon Jones in Dawson, GA. She relocated with her family to Steelton, PA in 1948.

She received her formal education at the Steelton-Highspire High School and from the Equipping the Saints School of Ministry.

After her graduation from high school, she began working for The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Bureau of Employment Security. She worked there for approximately 2 years. Later, she accepted a job for the Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation where she worked for three years. After that, she worked at the Public Utility Commission since 1969.

At the tender age of 7 years old, she accepted the Lord as her personal Savior and became a member of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church when it was located on the West Side of Steelton. She was a faithful member and served as a member of the Choir, Chairman of the Board of Christian Education, a Sunday School teacher, and a member the Prayer and Bible Band.

In March of 1988, Betty was a founding member of the Fellowship Baptist Church. She served faithfully as Chairman of the Church Board, a Deacon, and Financial Officer, Head of the Usher Board, Church School Teacher, Prayer Warrior, a member of the Choir and Worship Team, and the church Musician. Betty loved sharing with others that her lifeverse, found in Psalm 34:8, for all to "Taste and See that the LORD is good." She faithfully sent out text messages to many people with words from the Scriptures to keep everyone encouraged. Even the day before her passing, she took the time to send out her message at 3:18 in the afternoon to all those on her mailing list.

In her leisure, she loved to shop online for gadgets, cook and share meals with her Family and Friends. She also enjoyed watching game shows and her favorite soap opera, General Hospital on television and cheering for her favorite basketball team, the Golden State Warriors. She loved to play Scrabble and she let everyone know that she had the intention of winning the game, no matter what!

But more than ANYTHING else, she loved praising the Lord and feasting on His Word.

A few days before her passing, she expressed to some that she was tired of feeling sick in her body and was ready to "go home". She said she had made her peace with God and she was just waiting for Him to come get her. And that Wednesday morning, May 8, 2024, at Oak Hill Village Rehabilitation Center, at the age of 78 years, 18 days, He told her to come on home to rest.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her four sisters, Sheila, Marcia, Beverly and Lillie. She leaves to celebrate her life her brothers, Willie B. Jones of Highspire, PA and John B. Jones, Jr. of Harrisburg, PA; her sisters, Louise (Tyrone) Baltimore of Steelton, PA and Florine Canard of Newark, NJ and one "adopted sister" Elizabeth Jefferies of Steelton, PA; her "daughters of her heart", Erika Lyn Baltimore Roberts (Toby) of Morrisville, PA, Chanyce Fields (Undre) of Garland, TX, Jeana Harbison of Camp Springs, MD and Sonia Walwyn of Naperville, IL; her "sons of her heart", Darren Jones (Melissa) of Highspire, PA and Darnell Pemberton (Tina) of Lebanon, PA; her godson, Avery Walwyn of Naperville, IL and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, Church Family and friends.

Betty's life will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 in the Sanctuary of The First Baptist Church of Steelton, 1850 S. 19th Street, Harrisburg with viewing and visitation from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and burial in William Howard Day Cemetery.
