James Denson was born December 25th, 1941 and departed this life on Sunday, April 28th, 2024. He was the oldest of eight children to the late Katie and Willie James Denson. One brother, Roosevelt (Stella) Denson, preceded jo, om death.

James accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Elbethel Missionary Baptist Church. He graduated from Summer Hill High School and continued his education at Mississippi Valley State University earning a Bachelor's degree; and Delta State University earning a Master's degree. During his time at Mississippi Valley State University, James played basketball and football.

James married Rebecca Beatrice Denson and to this union one child, Reginald Bonzell Denson, was born.

James had a love and passion for sports which led him to pursue a coaching career. In 1965, his career began by becoming the head football coach and P.E. Instructor at Henry Weathers High School in Rolling Fork, Ms. Under his leadership, the football program had a record of 35-4-1, won three championships and went undefeated for two seasons. Throughout his coaching career, James earned many accolades. A few of his achievements include the following: District Coach of the Year (Awarded 7 times); Mississippi Coaches Association of the Year (Awarded 3 times); Received the Roy Garcia Outstanding Coach Award; Won 7 Track Division Championships, 2 Basetball Conference Titles, 4 Basketball Championships including a State Tournament appearance.

In 2010, James was inducted to the MSVU Athletic Hall of Fame Honors for becoming one of the winningest coaches in the history of football in the state of Mississippi. James ended his football coaching career with a record of 254-W, 107-L and 4 Ties; 12 Conference Championships, 8 undefeated seasons and 9 Division Championships. After retiring from coaching, he served two terms as the Mayor of Rolling Fork.

In his departure, James leaves to cherish his memories: a loving son, Reginald (Donah) Denson; one brother, Cornelius (Joyce) Denson; five sisters, Mary Bailey, Josie (Eugene) Brown, Josephine Jones, Juanita (Thomas) Edwards, and Annie (Percy) Burns; two grandchildren, Jasmine (Justin) Brown and Kanavis Denson; five great-grandchildren, Bryson Denson, Raelynn Denson, Landon Brown, Kayden Brown, and Kyler brown; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Coach Denson will be long remembered by the citizenry of Rolling Fork and all those who grew up under his tutelage. May his family—Bonzell and his lineage—and all his other loved ones receive God's comfort and keep during this difficult time.
