Mamaw Shirley To me she was a celebrity, Elizabeth Taylor like, when she walked into a room everyone noticed. She had great hair, red fingernails, hoop earrings, a voice smile and laugh that no one could ever forget, she was stylish even in her moo moo era. With her gold cigarette case, her Winston's, the beautiful jewelry, the smell of her perfume she filled every room. One of my favorite things was her kiss my grits attitude. She was who she was with no apologies. I like to think I got that from her! For me she was a safe place, comfort, and always good for a laugh. As kids Dottie and I spent a lot of our time with Mamaw & Papaw, we would help mamaw in the kitchen go to the barn with papaw, Dottie more than me because I was frankly scared to death of that dang Billy goat! I loved being in the kitchen with mamaw, I was the official helper when it came to stirring. My favorite was her homemade banana pudding. It took a lot of stirring. She would push the step stool over to the stove and tell me keep stirring til I tell you to stop which seemed to be about the time I thought my arm would fall off. We watched a lot of John Wayne with papaw, I would lay in mamaw's lap and she would play with my hair or scratch my back until I feel asleep. I would pinch myself to stay awake, sure that they had big parties after I was asleep. I didn't want to miss a minute of my time with them. I hope I never forget her voice, laugh smile or the smell of her perfume as they have always brought me such comfort. I will miss her dearly she taught me at a young age that life can be tough but you just have to choose to be tougher. (That lesson came very early on when I close lined my self on the hot wire around her yard)She had a quick wit, and could get anyone in line just as quick with a smile on her face & gritting her teeth. Her voice, smile and banana pudding got me through many days. I know everyone thinks their grandma is the greatest but mine left a mark in my life that I can only hope to leave for my grand babies one day! Mamaw I hope you are enjoying some great food, stories, and even your Winston cigarettes! 😂 Keep everyone in line until I get there. I Love you! Kati Cheri

Shirley, I almost called you last night and then I remembered you were gone. Those nightly phone calls were good medicine, catching up on the day, sharing jokes, and constructive criticism of life in general. The last ten years or so, we gathered evidence that the golden years were a mixed bag of aches and pains punctuated by the sweet kisses of grandchildren. Shirley, you are the only person I've ever known who would wait for a midnight power outage, then crawl along the baseboards looking for an outlet to plug in your rechargeable flashlight. You were the most faithful friend of my life, even when you drove me home from the retina doctor and rammed into the dumpster while admiring my new backup camera. We mourned together when Taco Bell closed in Bowie, and El Chico closed in Wichita Falls. And I will always have a vision of you dancing to the theme song of any Jean Claude Van Damme movie. God sent you to take my sister's place. When He tells us to bear one another's burdens, or how when one falls down, the other can help him up, he was describing the love of one friend for another. So tonight, when you sit down at the table with Pauline and Josie, and y'all thank Him for the ribs, potato salad and onion rings, know that I'm here thanking Him for you. Love, Linda
