Dr. John Henry Porter, Jr.

Dr. John Porter, Jr. entered eternal rest on April 1, 2024. He was married to Errie Marie Bobo,
and was the son of the Late John Henry Porter, Sr., and Ida Ruth Smith Porter.

At an early age he joined Holden Chapel Baptist Church in Boiling Springs, SC. He was a
graduate of Foster’s Grove High School. He attended Spartanburg Technical College and Claflin College. He received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Sherman College of Chiropractic in 1977.

Dr. John Porter served in the US Navy. As a serviceman, he received the Meritorious Unit
Commendation and the National Defense Service Metal, both in 1971.

He served as an Associate Professor of Clinical Sciences at Sherman College of Chiropractic for forty-one years, after joining the faculty in 1979. He received, from Sherman College the
distinction of Distinguished Professor Emeritus. He received numerous achievement awards as an associate professor, including faculty member of the year. Dr. John Porter retired from Sherman College of Chiropractic in 2020.

Dr. John Porter was the owner of the Porter Chiropractic Clinic. He was the second black
chiropractor in Spartanburg, SC. He opened his first clinic in 1981. He relocated to a larger
clinic on Kennedy Street.

Dr. John Porter has been a national and international speaker of chiropractic techniques. Dr.
John Porter has been a member of the International Chiropractic Association, Palmetto State
Chiropractic Council, Federation of Straight Chiropractors Organization, the Chiropractic
Federation, and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

As amazing as he was a Doctor of Chiropractic, he was an incredible Husband, Father,
Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, and Cousin. Left to cherish fond and loving memories are: his
loving wife of 50 years; his loving and dedicated children, Michael (Shevelle) Porter, Dr. Princess (Ralph) Porter-Fowler, and Jennifer (Michael) Porter-Lee all of Spartanburg, SC; his
grandchildren, Brenden Porter of Asheville, NC, Alyssa Lee of Greenville, SC, Avery Porter, Zoe
Fowler, Xander Fowler, Harper Lee and Hayden Lee of Spartanburg, SC; his siblings, James
(Barbara) Porter, Roberta T. Porter, Minister Shirley (Ray) Posey, Eddie (Robin) Porter, Dr.
Janice Porter, Rhonda Porter, Joyce Porter, Alisa (Joel) Rupe, and Comic Porter; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends with fond memories of his journey.

He was preceded in death by: his siblings, Charles Porter, Willie Porter, Fred Porter, Minister Ida Mae Hogue, and Tyra Porter.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2024 from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at The John Stinson Woodward Memorial Chapel, 602 Howard St., Spartanburg, SC. VIsitation will follow from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the chapel.

A Celebration of Life of Dr. John H. Porter, Jr. will be held on Sunday, April 14, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at The John Stinson Woodward Memorial Chapel, 602 Howard St., Spartanburg, SC. Burial with Military Rites will be in the Heritage Memorial Gardens, 3901 S. Church St., Roebuck, SC. Livestream will be available via Facebook on the TEEFERGUSONREPORT.
