Obituary For Charles Wortham Farrar

Charles Wortham Farrar, Jr., of Richmond, born on January 29, 1934, passed away peacefully at his home under the care of his loving family on March 23, 2024. Charles was the son of Nalda Baker Farrar and Charles Wortham Farrar Sr. His family members were long-time residents of Richmond, Virginia’s Lombardy Street in the West End. Charles, a product of Richmond Public Schools, attended Randolph Elementary followed by Moore Street Middle and ultimately graduated from Armstrong High.

Growing up Charles had a vibrant young life spending time with his family and neighborhood friends. He regularly attended Fifth Baptist Church Sunday School and was known throughout the neighborhood as little Chuck. He loved playing schoolyard football, pool and other games as well as using old toys to make skates, wagons and other new creations for outdoor play.

Around his senior year of high school, Charles voluntarily enlisted in the United States Navy. Prior to deployment overseas, Charles was stationed in New York City and spent much of his leave time with friends and family; particularly his older sister, Delores. Charles completed a full tour in the Navy serving with distinction in the Korean war.

After joining the Navy, Charles married first wife Corine Irma Ransom and from this union was born two children, Charles Ewert Farrar and Kim Y. Farrar. He later entered his life-long career in Virginia State Government with the ABC Board. Starting from the ground floor as a Porter, he retired with 40 years of service as an esteemed Director of Procurement where he championed statewide contracting with minority-owned businesses. After an amicable divorce, Charles married his devoted wife Pinkie Truitt Farrar, who faithfully cared for him along with his nursing team during his convalescence.

Charles was preceded in Glory by his parents, Charles Wortham Farrar Sr. and Nalda Baker Farrar; son, Charles Ewert Farrar and sister, Mildred Delores Finch. He leaves beloved wife, Pinkie Truitt Farrar; cherished daughter, Kim Y. Farrar; granddaughter, Dawnjia Y. I worked with Charles at ABC for many years and he has always been a stylish full of confidence, great character and highly intelligent person and always greeted you with a smile.
