Obituary For Dr. Gladys Jane McNeil

Dr. Gladys Jane McNeil passed away on February 20, 2024 at the age of 80 years old in Charlotte, NC. Her battle with serious medical conditions for numerous years continuously showed her resilience and will to move forward with the help of the LORD. Gladys was a warrior until the end.

Dr. McNeil was born to Enoch Chancy and Julia Bell Chancy on February 18, 1944. After graduating as class valedictorian from Finklea High School, she continued her education at South Carolina State University, Orangeburg where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She began her teaching career at North Myrtle Beach High School before moving to Loris High School for the rest of her 33 year teaching career as a biology teacher and then a special education teacher in Horry County. During that time, she obtained a Master of Education in Special Education as well as Counseling from the University of South Carolina, Columbia. Not only was Gladys active in public education, she was also very involved in her church as a Sunday School teacher, a missionary, a pianist, and a Bible study teacher to name a few roles. Gladys loved serving the LORD and learning more about HIM daily. One of her favorite TV shows was The WORD. This love led her to seek a higher level of learning at Blessed Hope Institute, Nichols from which she earned a Doctor of Christian Education at the age of 70. Most of her life Dr. McNeil was a faithful member of Prince Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Loris, SC. Upon moving to Huntersville, NC, she joined Greater Providence Baptist Church, Charlotte, NC for the duration of her life.

Gladys married Henry McNeil in 1965. During their almost 59 years of marriage, they welcomed four children into the family: Tonya Henderson (the late Rev. Wilfred), Dr. Karol McNeil-Horton (Scottie), Kurtis McNeil (Rehan), and Holli McNeil. She enjoyed being a mother but was truly excited to spend time with her grandchildren: Chancyriun Edward McNeil, Gore Vaughn, Darrick Horton, Sebastian Henderson, Akira Wilkins, Preshus Wilkins, Serenity Wilkins, Cicely McNeil and Clarissa McNeil. Her most delightful time after relocating to Huntersville, NC was spent getting to bond even more with her great grands: Nevaeh Horton, Darrick Horton, Aiden Vaughn, Nivay Vaughn, Chancyriun McNeil, Jr. and Charlotte McNeil.

Dr. McNeil was a giver who loved helping others. She truly believed that every person is here to serve and to be a blessing to others. Gladys firmly believed that giving and blessing leads to an abundance of blessings. She encouraged others to follow CHRIST by example and shared any and everything she learned that could help others. Gladys McNeil expected the same of her children who honored her by following her example. This was first evidenced to her by the way love was demonstrated in her home growing up. Although she was the only child born to her parents, Dr. McNeil did not experience life as an only child. Her family’s loving household became “home” to many children throughout her life who referred to each other as brother and sister.

Beyond the aforementioned, Dr. Gladys McNeil leaves behind a host of family members and friends who will miss her dearly.

Public Viewing will be held Friday, February 23, 2024 from the hours of 5pm until 7pm in the D.L. Grate Memorial Chapel

Funeral Services will be held 12:00pm Saturday, February 24, 2024 at Hills Chapel Baptist Church, Nichols SC with public viewing beginning at 11:00am prior to service. Burial in the Blanche Bodger Memorial Gardens.

They who die in Jesus live a larger, fuller, nobler life, by the very cessation of care, change, strife, and struggle. Above all, they live a fuller, grander life, because they sleep in Jesus and are gathered into His embrace, and awake with Him, clothed with white robes, awaiting the adoption, to wit, the redemption of the body. - Bishop James McKinnon and family

Mrs. McNeil, you were a mother figure, a listening ear and a strong shoulder to lean on for me when my mother passed away 2 years ago. I'll never forget you telling me "you still have a mother here looking after you." I held to that. You and Mr. Henry allowed me to feel those emotions when I had to be strong for others. Your love of family is real and endearing and our prayers, thoughts and support are extended to the entire McNeil Family. You are missed. Rest and sleep in peace sweet lady. Until we all gather again, Attorney Ezizze "Z' Foxworth

Tonya-I only had the pleasure of spending time with your mom on a few occasions over the years, but I know what a truly special person and mother "Mumzzy" has been. Her fierce love of family, education, and sharing the Word were ever present. You walk in her footsteps with generosity, dedication, perseverance and faith. Wishing you and your family peace and comfort. Kristen Shea

We are praying for the family to get through this. God did not make a mistake. I look at this like an ambassador sent to a foreign country, who when the mission is over, is called home. That is what happened with my sister Gladys. - Deacon Earnest and Deaconess Daisy Chestnut, Aenon Missionary Baptist Church, Rochester, NY
