John Warren Jones, III

Passed 02/20/2024

John W. Jones, III, affectionately known to many family members growing up as “John John”, departed this life on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at the age of 59. He was born on March 27, 1964 to John Warren Jones, Jr. and Virginia J Jones. He was preceded in death by his father, John Warren Jones, Jr.

John received his formal education in the Richmond Public School system, graduating from Marshall-Walker High School in 1982. He studied business at Virginia Commonwealth University.

At an early age, John attended Moore Street Missionary Baptist Church, where he accepted Christ and served as an usher for many years. In September 1998 John joined The Saint Paul’s Baptist Church, under the leadership of Dr. Lance D Watson where also served as an usher.

Following the legacy of his grandfather and father, John began working at the family-owned business, Church Hill Cleaners, at a very young age. By the age of five, he would help deliver dry cleaning with his father in Richmond and surrounding counties. John’s grandfather, John W. Jones, Sr. and great uncle, Cornelius A. Jones, established Church Hill Cleaning Works in 1931. John dedicated his entire working career to the family business, which he became the owner at the passing of his father. All of the Jones men are highly respected business men in the Church Hill community.

John loved fishing, being near the water, listening to music, airplanes, and spending time with his family. He was a Washington Commanders fan and enjoyed cutting cutting up with his cousins over the games. He also enjoyed meteorology and keeping everyone abreast of the impending weather conditions.

John was very kind and friendly with all. He was known for his infectious smile, wit, wisdom, and fun loving sense of humor. He could always bring a smile to your face. Although John was quiet and reserved in many settings, those who really knew him well waited for the jokes to come! He was also very generous and his generosity spread throughout the community. John was willing to lend a helping hand to anyone and he never met a stranger. Part of his philanthropy included providing affordable housing to the underserved. On many occasions he opened the Jones residence to serve as a shelter for others in need. Matthew 25:40.

In 1989, John met the one who would become the love of his life, Renee Diane Chavis. They were married on August 2, 1995, in Richmond, VA and were happily married for 28 ½ years. John was an excellent provider to his wife, children and grand children. He loved his family. His legacy lives on. Psalms 112:1-3.

John leaves to honor and treasure his memories, his devoted wife, Renee Chavis Jones; three daughters, Johnna Jones, Breanna Jones, KheOcia (Kia) Chavis; one son, Carlton Wilson; nine grandchildren, Kaleb Chavis, Kadiya Ellis, Blake Austin, Leylani Morgano, Jaiannah Winfield, Kiani Lindsay, Jr., Gianni Lindsay, David Lindsay, and newborn, Adonis Lindsay, who affectionately call him “Papa;” his mother, Virginia J Jones; two sisters, Johnilyn Doswell, Teri Jones; one brother Terence Jones; aunts, Cheryl Williams (Earl) and Helen King; two uncles, Walter Jackson and Joseph Jackson (Joyce), nieces, nephews, cousins, one sister-in-love, Patrice Chavis Maye (Derrick); two brothers-in-love, Ralph and Timothy Chavis (Sarah); and a host of friends.
