Leatta English

Mrs. Leatta Brashear English, 95 went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 4, 2024, in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Mrs. English was born to the late McDonald and Gonzella Brashear in Tonieville, Kentucky, on February 7, 1928. She attended the all black school in Glendale, Kentucky.

On January 12, 1945, she married the late Ernest “Buck” English, Jr., and to this union eight children were born. From these eight children, she has 17 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.

Mrs. English never worked outside of the home, but became a self-taught beautician and provided hair care services to many children and adults in her neighborhood. She was active in her children’s education serving as room mother and a member of the PTA at Valley View Elementary School.

Mrs. English was a member of First Baptist Church in Elizabethtown where she served on the Officers' Wives Ministry, Usher Board Ministry and the sang in the Adult Choir. For many years she made the bread that was used for communion.

As a homemaker, Mrs. English loved to cook and bake. She would prepare meals daily for her entire family. Her jam cake and fried pies were requested by many throughout the community. Mrs. English has always been a people person never meeting a stranger. Often she would make daily trips to the grocery store not only for her purchases but for good conversation with other shoppers and employees.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. English was preceded in death by one daughter, Norma Sue English; one granddaughter Tomisha Churchill; five brothers, William Douglas, Maynard Leo, Herbert Haskel, Carl Maxie, and Edward Ray Brashear, two sisters, Nettie Ray Brashear, and Florine Harris.

Mrs. English is survived by three sons, Don English, Michael English, and Gary English; four daughters, Dorotha Churchill, Carolyn (Harold) Tucker, Pamela (James) Haire and Carla (Charles) Jones; 16 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; one sister Norma Jean Moore; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.

The funeral will be held at 12:00 pm Saturday, February 10, 2024, at First Baptist Church in Elizabethtown with Rev. Roderick Jones officiating. Burial follows in Elizabethtown City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8:00 pm, Friday, February 9, 2024, at Percell & Sons Funeral Home in Elizabethtown.
