Obituary For Velma Marie Hunter-Batie

On a beautiful Monday, March 19,1962, the world and the Hunter family were blessed when Velma was born. After a full and productive life of 61 years, the Lord called her home on Wednesday, January 17, 2024.

Velma was born in Lowndes County Georgia to the late Reverend Theodore and Flostella Hunter. She grew up in the supportive Jones community in Valdosta, Georgia and graduated from Lowndes High School where she was a vivacious cheerleader graduating in 1980. She continued in higher education at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida where she completed an Associate of Science (AS) degree in Clerical Studies in 1983 and later graduated, with honors, as a Medical Coding Specialist in 2000. She had a successful and productive career as a Medical Coder in Outpatient and Emergency Room coding at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida and later as a Medical Records Technician-Coder for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Gainesville, Florida.

In Gainesville, she met the love of her life, the late James Grady Batie; they were married February 14, 1999 and loved and supported each other for twenty-four years. To this union a beautiful son was born, Travis James Batie. Velma grew up spiritually at St. Phillip A.M.E. Church in Valdosta, Georgia and served out her spiritual journey at the CampusView Church in Gainesville, Florida.

She is preceded in death by her parents Theodore and Flostella James Hunter; grandparents, Osbey and Ida Hunter and Adell and Magnell James; husband, James Grady Batie; brother, Isaac J. Hunter and three deceased infant sisters, Nellie Mae, Maxine and Flostella Hunter, II.

Mourning her loss and cherishing her memories is her devoted son Travis James Batie, “Travis”; one brother, Freeman (Evelyn) Hunter; three sisters, Verlene (Rev. Ozell-deceased) Young, Delois (Edward) Smith, Linda (McKesson) McCorvey; two devoted sisters-in-law, and three devoted brothers-in-law; also three life-long special friends of 56 years, since first grade, Patricia (Hines) Young, Jacquline (Edwards) Burgman and Debbie (Demps) Henderson and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at 2:00 P. M. at Campus View Church, 2720 S. W. 2nd Ave. Gainesville, Florida.

Final Celebration and Interment will be held on Saturday, February 3, at Morning Star Baptist Church 1051 Howell Rd at 2:00 P. M. Rev. Hooker is the pastor and Dr. William C. Morgan will officiate.

Interment will follow in the Pallbearer Cemetery.
