Obituary For Rosa Lane

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Rosa Lee Courtney Lane who passed away suddenly on January 12, 2024,at the age of 72 at Stonecrest Medical Center. Her departure is gravely felt by her family and countless others who loved her dearly.

Rosa, or Rose as she was affectionately known by many, was born to Nay and Mary Alice Shipley Courtney in Jefferson City, TN. The youngest of six children, Rose was raised on a dairy farm in Sweetwater, TN and spent her early years quilting, canning, and crocheting with her mom. She was a sweet person with an infectious laugh and was humble to a fault.

After marrying Larry Curtis Lane July 11, 1970, the newlywedsmoved to a quiet holler where they raised their three children on small tobacco farm in Roane County TN. Her husband of 50 years thought she was “the prettiest and smartest woman in the world”. Rose was a loving wife and mother who loved rocking babies. For many years she would sew clothes for her family and her daughters often enjoyed newly crafted dresses at Easter.

Rose enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and always welcomed their assistance when making biscuits. She loved mysteries and problem solving. Her sudoku puzzle book was never far away and she spent countless hours working puzzles and playing games. Rose was an avid Vols fan and enjoyed the occasional game on TV.

Rose loved spending time in her garden. Among the many flowers she grew the calla lily was her favorite. She excelled at everything, included making, reupholstering, and repairing furniture. Recently, she finished redoing a deck.

Rose was well known for her baking skills. During her time as the Bakery Manager at the Ingles in Athens, TN her bakery won numerous awards. After she made a slight modification to the donut recipe folks would drive from all over for Athens Ingles donuts. Rose was also an expert cake decorator using her attention to detail to craft cakes that served as the center piece of many joyful occasions. It was at Ingles that she met lifelong friends Jackie Stanton and Mary Shell.

Preceded in death by her husband, Larry Curtis Lane; brotherand sister-in-law, Marvel H. and Sarah Courtney; brother, John E. Courtney; and parents, Nay and Mary Alice Shipley Courtney.

Rose’s spirit is carried on by her three children Tonia Lane (Angus Dawe), Mona Lane Holt (Jonathan Holt), and Larry Lee Lane (Tasha Lane); brothers and sisters-in-law, Truman and Ruby Courtney, Connie and Bennie Mae Courtney, and Bobby and Wanda Courtney; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and good friends.
