Obituary For Leon Jackson McDougle, Jr.

Leon Jackson McDougle Jr., also known to many as “Mac” entered eternal life on December 22, 2023, at his home after a lengthy illness which began in 2011. Mac had a giant size heart, and he loved his family dearly and would do whatever it took to take care of them. He also helped and gave to many over the course of his life.

Mac was born March 2, 1943, in Ashville, North Carolina to the late Leon and Jennie McDougle Sr. He was raised in Shelby, North Carolina.

Mac was educated in the public schools in Shelby. He was multi talented, played in a band at 13, playing tenor saxophone. He received his Bachelor of Science in Health Education and his Master of Science in Health Education from North Carolina Central University, Durham, North Carolina in the sixties. Mac while attending North Carolina Central University became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mac also attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he completed all the courses and comprehensive exam requirements for his Doctorate. He also served on many community-based commissions, committees, and boards.

Mac spent his entire career, 39 years, at Bennett College for women until his retirement in 2005.

During his tenure at Bennett College Mac served as an instructor and department chair of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. He was the coordinator of Special Projects and Grants, Division of Education and Social Studies. He also was an Associate Professor of Curriculum and Instructions. Because of Mac’s love of sports and coaching, he became the head basketball coach, head tennis coach and athletic director. Being the swim instructor, he taught many Belles to sink or swim!

He also worked as head of security during his time at Bennett.

Mac was a great swimmer and an avid golfer, who would often brag about how great he played and the many trophies he had won. He loved to tell jokes and would not tell the joke until he had everyone’s undivided attention.

Mac is survived by the love of his life for over 31 years, his wife, Dorinda Renee McDougle. His sister, Grace Chavious, sons Darrin McDougle and Zaquan Little, grandchildren, Paige McDougle & Buckley McDougle and great grandchildren Laila Daye and Cali Cooper, whom he adored.

He is also survived by his mother-in-law (Ann Ford), two sisters-in-laws, Francinea Williams and Pamela Ford, one brother-in-law James Ford (Darlene) and a host of relatives’ nieces, nephews and friends.

He had two special and devoted friends, Rev. Dr. Anthony and Jill Berry who have been on this journey with him since the beginning of his illness.

In Lieu of flowers consider making a donation to Authora Care of Greensboro or The Cone Health Cancer Center in memory of Leon “Mac” McDougle.

My sincere sympathy is extended to the McDougle and Ford family members. I will always remember my handsome PE Teacher at Bennett College many years ago. In more recent years, I remember a charming couple who came to vote together at Allen Middle School. What a rich educational legacy & memories he leaves behind. Blessings to his family members always, Modgie Enzlow Williams (Bennett Class of 1970)

Coach Mac was the best. I laughed in his class more than anything. He was a funny professor who always talked about his sons and his wife. I believe my first year at Bennett his son was only 5years and he was so proud. My condolences to the entire family as he was a light.

Coach McDougle was the best gentleman our Belle's ever met from day one. Coach never changed. We respect him as he respected us. I loved his class! He was an awesome coach/mentor. At times, we played horribly but he would just say"Y'all know what you did wrong and y'all know how to fix it...you all learned this very day that I am right and y'all were wrong for not following my directions!" Coach never singled out a player but you knew what "y'all" meant. Coach was full of love, laughter, stories, and advice. Coach will be remembered always in our hearts and through our stories. Rest well Coach❣️ My deepest condolences unto his family, friends, colleagues, and my Bennett Belle Sisters. We love you Coach McDougle 🔔💙 Stacey Mitchell-Precia 92' Class

Dear Mrs. McDougle and Family, I was saddened to hear of my former colleague's passing. I met Coach McDougle shortly after I started working at Bennett College in 1998. By that time, he was serving as director of campus safety. I remember meeting him during my first few weeks as employee— after receiving a parking ticker. Fortunately for me, Coach was a firm but fair man. He squashed the ticket and simply told me not to do that again. I will remember him fondly, and thank God that our paths crossed. "And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." ~ Philippians 4:7 ML Haigler- Greensboro, NC
