Arthur L. Epps, affectionately known as “Slim,” was born April 6, 1945, in East Chicago, IN, son of the late Tommy Lee Philips and the late Hattie Brown Epps. Growing up, he attended South Girard High School in the class of 1963. Slim pursued a career as a truck driver in his former days but was a true entrepreneur, owning both a restaurant and store in Indiana. Slim gained recognition in Indiana for his renowned restaurant that served the best gyro sandwiches and food in town.
Slim was a man who loved family and never met a stranger. He had a heart of gold under that hard exterior. To those that knew him, that hard exterior was only a facade and cover up to the identity of a funny, charming and loving giant. He avoided questions at every extent with the phrase of "It don't make no difference." He was also known to threaten you with the infamous list that he would place your name on and with a check mark to emphasize how much trouble you really were in with in.
Slim's family was at the center of his heart always talking about who was related and where everyone was located in the family;keeping countless records of contacts to include phone numbers, addresses and number of children everyone had. You could find Slim talking to someone about anything. As he would say he was an "International" player. He loved to cook, bake cakes and pies and share them with his loved ones. He was always a phone call away if you needed him.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Cleveland Epps; sister, Effie Mae Williams and daughter, Nina Givan.
He leaves to cherish his memories a granddaughter, Janai Johnson of Gary, Indiana; great granddaughter, Bre'Niya Johnson of Gary, Indiana; brother, Lavonn (Willie C.) Epps in Chicago, IL; sister, Peggy Benton in Phenix City, AL; devoted niece, Patrice Mott and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

To Slim's Family, you have my Deepest Heartfelt Condolences. He was a great friend to me and my two sons. More like family. A heart of gold. For many years he spent every Thanksgiving with me at my house. Our birthdays were 2 days apart which made us so much alike even to having the last word (that's what Aries do). He thought I was the craziest woman to ever be born when I woke him in the middle of the night once to send my boys to pick him up and take him to open the restaurant and hear up barbeque for our barbeque dinners and make gyros. At that point he just shook his head at me. My fellow Aries always looked out for me. I will miss our talks and even the last one just before Thanksgiving when he promised he would be coming this way and I would meet him in Dolton, IL.just to see each other. Never knew it would be our last talk nor the visit would not take place. So glad Slim, God allowed our paths to cross. I will never forget you and tell my Baby I said hi until I get there.
