MELVIN LEE GREGORY was called home to our Lord on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 in Richmond, VA. He was born August 8, 1946 to the late Milton and the late Sedora Merritte Gregory in Mecklenburg County, VA. He was also preceded in death by his siblings- Marshall and Dorothy Merritte.
At an early age Melvin was baptized and joined Union Hill RZUA Church, Baskerville, VA.
To know Melvin, was to love him. He was a unique and caring individual who touched the lives of all who knew him. He was a 1966 graduate of the former East End High School, South Hill, VA. He was a scholar and received awards as a student. In high school he was awarded for never being absent or tardy, while being responsible for driving “Bus #6.” Melvin had a keen knack for his family history, traveling and fishing. He had a real passion for driving buses.
After high school, Melvin was employed at Burlington Industries from 1966-1973. During this time, he married his former wife, Barbara Jean Winckler, and to this union a lovely daughter, Janice Marcia Gregory was born.
He later decided that he wanted to get back behind the steering wheel again and joined the Greyhound Bus Lines in 1973. Throughout his career with Greyhound Bus Lines, he gained many awards and recognition for customer excellence, leadership and service, milestone awards for over 5,000,000 miles driven and 75,000 hours on the road. His route started in Virginia and ended in New York after he relocated to New Jersey in the 80’s.
In 1993, Melvin married Alice Palmer in Bronx, NY. Throughout the years Melvin continued to dedicate his time and service to his family and work. When not on the road working, he was on the road traveling to be with family and friends.
After 30 years of service, in 2003 he retired and relocated to Richmond, VA. During his retirement time in Virginia, Melvin and Alice spent the past 20 years nesting, caring for their family and friends and don’t forget about fishing and barbecuing.
Melvin leaves to cherish his memory his wife- Alice Gregory; three daughters- Janice Marks, Stacey Creswell, and Alicia Privott; three sons-in-law, Charles Marks, Leroy Creswell, and DeAngelo Privott; three brothers- Charles (Lorraine) Gregory, Robert (Debra)Gregory, and Lonnie (Celestine) Gregory; six siblings-in-law, seven grandsons; one granddaughter; ten great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends.
