Obituary For Charles Ragin

Born in Sumter County, South Carolina, December 30, 1933. Died November 28, 2023.


He was one of four children of the late Dewey and Daisy Keith Ragin. One brother and two
sisters predeceased him.


He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Womack Ragin; two stepsons, Marcus T. Cohen (Angie) of
Orlando, Florida, Landon M. Cohen (Dr. Jade) of Spartanburg, SC; one granddaughter, Nadia Jordan
Cohen; two grandsons, Noah James Cohen and Jackson Charles Cohen of Orlando, Florida; two nephews, Larry Anderson (Rita) of Jackson, TN, Myron Williams of Sumter County SC one niece, Wandra Williams of Columbia, SC and a host of great nieces, nephews, and cousins.


Charles attended the public schools in Clarendon and Sumter Counties, SC. He also attended
Claflin University, SC; South Carolina State University, SC; Clemson University, SC; University of South
Carolina; and the University of Virginia. He received degrees from Benedict College and the University of
Wisconsin.


Charles served as an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina. He was a teacher,
counselor, and assistant principal at Cumming Street School from 1958-1969. He was assistant principal
at Evans Junior High School in Spartanburg County School District No. 7 from 1969 to 1972. Charles was
principal of the Individual Learning Center from 1972-1981. He retired as Assistant Superintendent of
Spartanburg County School District No. 7 in 1996 after 38 years of service in School District Seven.
Charles was a cradle Episcopalian. His parents and parental grandparents were Episcopalians.
He was a Senior Warden at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany for 12 years and a member of the
Vestry for 20 years.


He was one of the founders of the Epsilon Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and one of the
organizers of Junior Leadership Spartanburg.
Charles served as an Army Operations Intelligence Specialist at Fort Bliss, Texas, and Elmendorf
Air Force Base in Alaska. He served in the Army Reserves from 1959 to 1962.


Charles served on several boards and commissions in Spartanburg: Mobile Meals of Spartanburg
County, Greater Spartanburg Ministries, Leadership Spartanburg, Piedmont Chapter of the American Red
Cross, The Charles Lea Center, Allocation Panel of the United Way of the Piedmont, and the Spartanburg
County Planning Commission. He was the chairman of the Cammie F. Clagett Scholarship Fund, which
has distributed more than a quarter of a Million dollars in scholarships for qualified students.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 12:00 noon at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, 141 Advent St., Spartanburg, SC. Burial will follow with Military Rites at 2:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC.

Private Fraternity Rites with Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. will be held on Friday, December 8, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. at The John Stinson Woodward Memorial Chapel, 602 Howard St., Spartanburg, SC. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the chapel.


Memorials may be made to Mobile Meals of Spartanburg County.
