Nellie Viola Rhodes-Foster

09/22/1936 - 11/10/2023

Nellie Viola Rhodes Foster affectionately known as “Sister” was born to Odessa Hall Rhodes and Charlie Stewart on September 22, 1936. Nellie was a very vibrant, loving and caring family-oriented person, who could cook some good old southern meals. Her fluffy homemade biscuits would melt in you mouth. She had several of her nieces asking for her recipe.

She received her formal schooling in Siloam, Georgia. Nellie had a beautiful soprano voice and she joined a gospel group that traveled and sang at local churches. It was her hometown of Siloam where she met and married the love of her life, Floyd Foster. They moved to Atlanta, Georgia where this union held their vows, till death do us part.

Nellie’s passion and heart’s desire was in the kitchen. She worked at S and S Cafeteria for 15 years until she retired. Being raised in a spiritual background, she joined Tabernacle Baptist Church on Boulevard Street under the leadership of Reverend Dorsey.

When Nellie’s health failed, her faithful sister-in-law, Shirley (Foster) Roberson moved her into her residence and lovingly cared for Nellie. There was a “special bond” between Shirley and Nellie.

We thank God for loaning us Nellie and for the precious time she lived.

She leaves sweet memories to her three sisters, Etherlean Kimbro (Social Circle, Ga.); Ella Mae Springer (Atlanta, Ga.) and Mary Mason (Detroit, Mich.). Three sisters-in-law: Inez (Foster) Thornton; Shirley (Foster) Roberson and Vivian (Moth) Foster. Two brothers-in-law: R.J. Foster and Donald Foster; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Johnny Floyd Foster, her mother: Odessa Hall Rhodes, her father: Charlie Stewart; her stepfather: Charlie Rhodes and her brother: Jimmie Smith.
