Obituary For Lois Jean Thomas-Ewings

Bernard's Family Funeral Care announces the death of Mrs. Lois Thomas-Ewings of Winder, Georgia. Mrs. Lois transitioned to eternal rest Saturday, November 4, 2023.

Mrs. Lois was the founder and former Facility Supervisor of East Athens Educational Dance Center until her retirement in 2017. She had a passion for mentoring and enriching the lives of children. Lois poured her heart into youth as the director of the Girls Club program for many years and by teaching dance. She moved to Athens in 1985 hoping to find "a representation of the arts that included racially diverse populations." Inspired by a mural painted by Wadsworth Jarrell on the side of the East Athens Community Center that identified it as a “place of the arts,” she began a volunteer program to provide a performing arts experience for under-privileged children. The program grew to the point that it required its own facility, and the East Athens Educational Dance Center was opened in 1993. Ms. Lois will always be remembered for her abiding love of the arts, and the work that she did to share that love with everyone in Athens.

Mrs. Lois' Life Celebration will be held Saturday, November 25, 2023 at the Twelve O’clock hour at the Historic Morton Theatre, 195 W. Washington Street, Athens, GA 30606.

H. Bernard Holston, Sr. and the staff of Bernard’s Family Funeral Care are honored to have been chosen to serve the Thomas-Ewings family.

You helped me come out my shell, when I was younger and helped me again once I moved back 20 years later. I will always love you.

Ms. Lois thank you for teaching the youngsters in our community to be graceful dancers and thank you for putting up with the older ones of us who had dreams. I can remember purchasing "tap shoes" that had me fooled that I could really tap dance. Thanks for being the light for so many of our at risk students! Prayers and condolences to your family!

Miss Lois as she was so affectionately called had a beautiful sweet spirit and an ever-ready smile. My granddaughter, Joi Sims, was a dancer in her dance program, and I was a "wanna be" dancer. Although, I did not learn many steps, Miss Lois was patient with me, and she allowed me and another mature participant to open the show several years ago. We were the first dancers in the act, and we had so much fun - just being on stage surrounded by her younger talented dancers was such a joy and is a cherish memory for me. My Condolences to her entire family. ~Mildred Lyle

Mrs. Lois was my dance teacher from age 5-17 and man was she so much more than that to me. She taught me so much. She taught me to have confidence being the shortest dancer in the room. She taught so many life lessons that I take with me to this very day. Her accelerated and G.I.F.T.E.D programs were very intense and she pushed us to great lengths but I truly thank her for it because it made me a better dancer and allowed for me to learn how to take constructive criticism at a very early age. She truly fulfilled her time here on this earth by sharing her passion of dance with so many of us. I will miss her more than words can say! We love you forever Mrs. Lois. Thank you for everything ❤️ -Cherish Gresham

Dear Thomas-Ewings Family Please except my warmest sympathies and my deepest condolences, for the homegoing of our dear Lois. Lois choreographed and starred in my Opening Two Nights shows, "AN EVENING WITH CALVIN SMITH: From Vaudeville to Broadway" for the reopening of the historic Morton Theater's Restoration on December 17 and 18th 1993. In 2010, I returned to Athens to present the 100 anniversary show of the Morton Theater, entitled "a night of 100 stars".. Both of these productions, never would have been the success that they were, without the gifted Louis Thomas Ewings choreographing and advising!! She once danced in Las Vegas and soared as a professional artist. She touched countless lives through the east Athens dance center. She trained and motivated a new generation of dancers and artists. Rest in peace, my dearest Lois Thomas Ewings, Godspeed 🌹🌹🌹 c
