Obituary For Barbara Roane Banks

Barbara Jane Roane Banks, of Richmond, passed away November 6, 2023. She was the daughter of the late Elvira Martin Anderson Roane and William Henry Roane Sr. Barbara was born in Howardsville, Virginia; Buckingham County, on November 5, 1937.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rutherford Roane Banks; sister, Ruby Goode, and brothers, Fred Anderson, Jr, Charlie Edward Anderson, Charles William Anderson (Ernestine) and William Henry Roane, Jr. (Mary). Barbara was a native of Richmond and lived at 23 W. Jackson St. She attended Baker Street School, Booker T. Washington School and graduated from Maggie L. Walker High School in 1956. She married Rutherford Roane Banks on May 3, 1958, and continued her studies at St. Phillips Nursing School, where she received an LPN license in April of 1959. She worked in St. Phillip's Emergency Room for several years before starting a new career path with the U.S.Postal Service. After retiring from the U.S. Postal Service in 1992, Barbara did not stop working but became a foster parent, caring for over twenty children for a span of about seven years.

Barbara attended and was baptized at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Later in her adult life, she became a member of St. Paul's Baptist Church, where she received Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and actively participated with the Refiner's Ministry.

She will be remembered for the love, care and support she lavished on her family and friends. She was a kind soul and always gave 100%. She lived a good long life, enjoyed traveling, social and family gatherings.

Surviving are her daughters, Rhonda Diane A. Banks and Ronetta Barbara Banks; adopted son, Lamont Phillips Bank; grandson, Roderick Marcell Banks; five sisters, Shirley Anderson and Catherine Gray, of Esmont Va., Virginia Anderson of Scottsville, Va., Dorothy Walker (Beverly), of Kents Store, Va., and Beulah Dibble of Charlottesville, Va.; five brothers, Sylvester Anderson (Elaine), of Somerset, Va., Roger Anderson (Deana) of Crozet, Va., Robert Anderson (Betty), of Farber, Va., James Anderson (Diane), of Charlottesville, Va., and Quinton A. Roane (Vonne), of Richmond, Va.; four sisters-in-law, Rosetta Simms (Robert), of Richmond, Va., Roxied Lyons (Franklin), and Roslyn Goode of RIchmond, Va., Joyce Banks, of San Jose, CA.; three brothers-in-law, Russell Banks, and Reginald Banks, Sr. (Alice) of RIchmond, Va. and Ralph Banks, Sr., of Upper Marlboro, MD; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd, where viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, November 16,2023. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, November 17, at Woodland Cemetery.
